Angry about proposed travel ban exemption for footballers

One side "benefit" benefit of covid and the cessation of play (up until last week) was not having the thrice weekly reports of indiscretions of one sort or another, urinating in public, sleeping with someone else's wife, bashing security guards, drink/drug driving, domestic assault, breeches of AVO, smashing up hotel rooms, bikie gang associations, rape of junior female followers, performance enhancing drugs, racism to name but a few.

Lachie made one stupid mistake, hardly comparable to sexual assault and definitely doesn’t make him bad. Dunno what Beams did but I couldn’t find anything on google. Those two are good eggs.

Many AFL players have been accused of sexual assault-seem to be at least as many as the NRL.
Interestingly a 4 Corners program on sexual Assaults in the NRL still has the transcript of the show online.A similar 4 Corners program on the AFL has been totally deleted.Maybe the AFL just has better connected PR managers.

I haven't read of AFL players doing so much of any of this kind of stuff. Not the sexual assault kind.

Wasn't hard to find lots of allegations of AFL players and sexual assaults using google.The first 4 have been in the news recently.

And there certainly are Rugby League players that do good deeds and charity work and most are good citizens.
One in particular that I followed was Billy Moore.He played for the North Sydney Bears which was the team I followed.In those years several Bears played for QLD so I have always followed QLD in the State of Origin.

When I moved to the Sunshine Coast Billy owned a restaurant at Mooloolaba.Our son took after his dad following the Bears.So on a visit home we went to the restaurant and our son asked Billy If he could get his jersey signed by Mario Fenech-his favourite player.Now Mario lived in Sydney but Billy took the jersey and a month or so later brought it back signed by Mario and a few other of the Bear's team of that era.

He has been involved in Junior football on the Coast and works with many troubled young fellows.A true gentleman with a great sense of humour.

In terms of codes and behaviour violations , there must be some stats around.
All I hear in qld is the rugby league transgressions , which colours my perspective.
Perhaps the cellar dwellers hear about the AFL contribution.

I just did a real quick scan over those 20. I believe that most of them are regarded as ‘Stars’.

The problem is the system. You take a bunch of very young and immature blokes and make them into demigods paying them way too much money, they have little responsibility. There’s a huge industry built around the games with too much money made by vested interests in these ‘stars’. It’s a corrupt and corrupting system.

Not sure it’s “way too much money”
Sure the stars earn really good money but there are plenty of blokes on wages that aren’t great for the sacrifices to their lifestyle they have to make. I have several really close friends in the AFL system and have coached guys that have gone on to play AFL and for many the life isn’t what it’s cracked up to be

Why the anger? Why the envy? Sport is a key part of the economy.

Getting footballers back to work, gets others back to work. Getting other professional athletes such as netballers etc also gets other back to work.

ie Foxtel and TV Networks have been sacking staff.

With Foxtel CV19 is a double blow as it loses revenue not not just from advertising etc, but from all the commercial installations in pubs and other businesses.

Newspapers and other sport journalist have been stood down.

Apart from the footballers there is all the support and admin staff. There are the umpires. There are all the ground staff. There are all the sports clinic staff etc etc.

We need to start getting more people back to work and not just professional footballers, when it is safe to do so. It is now safe to do so.

With virtually zero unknown local transmissions now for some time, the risk from flying 30 odd staff of teams into states is tiny. Remember that various staff are already flying each and every day throughout Australia.

A week ago elective surgery and other health work was resumed. I look forward to more and more jobs being reactivated as it is now safe to do so.

I note for example that here in Victoria that over this weekend that several major shopping centres were opened again as it is now safe to do so.

As the work is ramped up, the interstate travel bans will also soon be gone as it will be safe to do so. That will then mean that more Qantas and Virgin jobs can then start being saved as more domestic flights are resumed, along with all the other people that work at airports.

Then more taxi and uber drivers, more bus driver etc.


PS By safe to do so, I do not mean reactivate everything at once. But progressively and in stage. Plus as more widespread community testing is now available and is being rolled out. Hopefully the new app will also add to the contact tracing tools.

And this is why I want people to download the app. We need to get the economy on the road to recovery now it can be safe and controlled to do so. Manage outbreaks if they occur, isolate, test.

However it is a shame that it is NRL that gets the first exemption. I'd much prefer it if it was say, tennis or something like that but obviously wrong season. And NRL will only rock NSW and Qld's boats. Nothing to see south of the NSW border.

However with NRL I guess they won't have to worry about crowd control - attendance at matches isn't their strong point.

Obviously NSW and QLD will see the majority of the benefits from the NRL but the Melbourne Storm do create a bit for the Victorian economy also. I’ve stayed at the Pullman many times when the opposition have been staying there and they book out a stack of rooms and if you head down to Southbank on game day the bars and restaurants are packed full of supporters having a meal or drink with many establishments offering specials and showing the game live.

Some perspective is needed, positive stories about athletes don’t gain the number of clicks/sold newspapers that the negative stories do.

I nearly just blew my foofu valve when I heard on ABC radio that a NZ Rugby League team was expecting to get an exemption from the travel ban on non-Australian citizens so that they can come to Australia for the "vital" reason of playing footy.

They didnt get an exemption to "play" they got an exemption to carry out their employment. Anyone could apply for this exemption to do their work. There is a huge number of ancillary workers in the industry that will also return to work once football starts again, and its important for all of them.
