It was all so amazing... It's so easy to just walk in NYC, most days we did around 20,000 steps on the fitbit counter

Do it! NYC is amazing, the food, the city, the people, its definitely worth it.

Having previously walked over the Brooklyn bridge, we decided to go over the Manhattan bridge this time. View from the Manhattan Bridge

We visited the 9/11 memorial and I decided to go for the early entry morning tour. It's a very emotional tour and essentially having the place to yourself (in a tour group) is an excellent way of experiencing what happened, the individual stories and the aftermath. Our tour guide was excellent and I felt that they've done an amazing job to both tell the story of the survivors and those who passed, and also for it to be a respectful memorial. There are parts of the memorial that are really raw emotionally; like voicemail messages between loved ones and raw images of people both alive and who had passed. It's something that I would definitely recommend, its very respectful and worthwhile.

The final steel column removed from the clean up and one of the retaining walls built against the hudson - water still seeps through the walls.

We also went to 2 shows; Newsical the Musical, and off-broadway skit show based on current news events (mainly bagging Trump) and Anastasia which is a story of a Russian Princess who's family is killed off and then suffers amnesia while she discovers who she really is. Both were quite enjoyable, tickets were purchased from a TKTS booth downtown.

MoMA was another stop on one of their free entry Fridays - it was quite packed. There was a fashion exhibit on during while we were there 'is fashion art?' which was interesting. There is also quite a wide range of exhibits on the various levels which displayed modern art across different timelines.

Some of the artists on display include; James Pollock, Van Gough, Da Vinci, Picasso, Henri Rousseau.

Our little New York adventure was up and we had to leave :( Next stop Tokyo!!!

Our Uber to LGA was easy but the AA check-in was unnecessarily painful. Our flights were LGA>BOS on AA in Y and then BOS>NRT in JL in J, so not wanting to stuff around I went straight to the premium desk where you would expect to have someone who knows what they're doing but this woman had no idea.

First problem was 'I can't pull up your booking, there are 3 booking numbers this is wrong'. After I explained that we have been flying on this same booking for 5 weeks without any issues her response was well they've done it wrong. I eventually pointed her in the direction of the AA PNR and told her to ignore the QF and JL PNRs so that fixed that.

Second issue - Can you confirm what seats I have for the JL flight (as I had pre-selected a pair of seats)? Her response was something like, oh no I can't tell you'll just have to wait and see if the machine prints your boarding pass - ok sure  JL boarding passes printed out ok as per my seat selection.

Third issue - She complained that my luggage was overweight. I firmly but politely asked her to review the baggage allowances for this ticket for which she bumbled around on the screen for 5 minutes and eventually took the bag. Mind you, the combined weight of our bags was below their allowances anyways.

Fourth issue - I was getting a bit over it at this point and noticed she didn't bother with any priority tags on our bags so I politely asked her to put priority tags on which she flat out said no I can't do that. I questioned it again based on our J international connection which she refused again despite checking bags through to NRT. At this point I was over her attitude so I requested a supervisor who came out and took one look at our boarding passes and said 'those bags should have priority tags'. With her tail between her legs she handed over our documentation without saying a word. What a joke!

Walked up to the AA admirals club expecting to be declined after asking if we had access based on our J connecting flight and we were granted access which was a nice surprise after being completely frustrated at the check-in counter. The lounge was very basic with a snack bar which had some bagels, yogurt and toast. We received 2 drinks vouchers which we used for water.

Boarding onto the E190, flight AA2136 was easy due to a light load. Flight was delayed a bit due to traffic but it was a relatively straight forward flight in seats 11D and 11F

After landing at terminal B in I though we would walk to terminal E, but ground staff advised against it so we walked out and caught one of the complimentary shuttles between terminals. I still can't believe that Sydney has no complimentary airport operated shuttles, not just QF or VA.

Anyways, we were in the BA lounge in no time which is a nice and comfortable lounge. Decent drinks selection and a nice curry chicken on offer along with some sandwiches alongside standard offerings.

Our home for the next 14 hours - B787-9
IMG_1439.JPG

Priority boarding worked ok and we got a very warm welcome by the crew once on board. I was very much looking forward to this J experience as I had read some wonderful reviews on JL business and it all met my expectations. The J cabin is laid out in a staggered 2-2-2 with direct aisle access for all which I think is a great J cabin layout.

The window pair was our office. Amenity kits, slippers, pillow and blankets on seats.

IMG_1447.JPG IMG_1446.JPG

The purser personally welcomed each guest and introduced herself to everyone which was a nice touch. Hot towels, a drink and a cardigan was offered prior to take off to all J pax which was a full cabin btw

I went for the Japanese menu which I was a little disappointed with.

Pumpkin on the left and a savoury panna cotta on the right. Not much flavour
IMG_1462.JPG
Seasonal delicacies - the fried shrimp cake, mushrooms and octopus were nice, the rest weren't to my tasting.
IMG_1463.JPG

The salmon was nice and the beef was very dry.

The pistachio blanc manger dessert.
IMG_1466.JPG

I also had a chicken cutlet sandwich on arrival to NRT but that made my stomach feel a bit sick...

The flight overall was excellent, probably the easiest 14 hour flight I've ever done. The hard product is great, the seats are very comfortable, a little on the firm side but that didn't bother me. There might have been a pillow top for the bed in the overhead lockers but we weren't asked if we wanted to use it. When fully flat I kind of had to lay on an angle or shuffle all the way up to the top of the headrest to stretch out but I still got a few hours worth of Zs. The aisle seats have a small storage cavity at shoulder height next to the seat while the window seats have a little pouch behind the seats. I believe this to be a compromise to get a wider seat and foot rest. The entertainment system has some good movie options but nowhere near EK and QF standards.

The soft product was very good, staff were very attentive and always smiling. Overall a really enjoyable flight.

Love the NYC food photos! The best tacos in towns are the al pastor ones at Taco Mix on the upper east side/ into Harlem! They are the real deal.
