Another upgrade question - whose points do they use?

The problem is that some people's experiences do not reflect this new approach hence the confusion...

Bue without actually having access to lists of who applied for upgrades, their status, when they applied etc and who got them - how do people really know who is being upgraded and why?

... also more confusion in that at one time it was documented that within the determined "status" level of a request, time of request would be used to determine priority.

Recent anecdotes have indicated that booking class may now be more relevant. e.g. L trumps V ...

True - there is an element of supposition and belief but I have heard reports of non-status pax getting upgrades to F using points with a very full load in F (i.e. F1) just before the upgrade cleared when using points from a status pax account. Not definitive but who truly knows how the upgrade lottery works?

Have seen this first hand several times. And when the upgrade request was submitted only a matter of days before the flight. Of course its always possible that each time there were no other QFF members requesting an upgrade. In my examples, the upgraded passenger was not even a QFF member as far as the QF reservation was concerned (but was an AAdvantage member).

My anedoctal evidence:

4 x Y-J upgrades - all on the busy pacific route - all a WP getting a Bronze upgraded.

1 x Y-PE - LHR-AUS - a gold upgrading a Bronze - this flight was full ie J3 TW2 so the upgrade didn't clear into J but did get into PE.

I have another question how upgrades are dealt with on a multi journey flight - eg SYD-LHR (via SIN):

All other things being equal, which is given priority-

SYD-SIN?
SIN-LHR?
SYD-LHR?

- I'm sure I've just opened another discussion point which will go on ...

I mean how is a passenger travelling between SYD and SIN treated versus a passenger who is travelling between SYD and LHR if both have requested upgrades [all other things being equal].

I suspect that passengers who have requested upgrades on the entire length of the flight (ie SYD-LHR) over passengers travelling on only parts but this is my suspicion only.

I would hazard a guess and say it depends which markets that seat belonged to. The cabin gets sliced into

SYD-LHR, and SYD-SIN/SIN-LHR.

I would have thought it depends which slice of cabin it was in. But, who knows what shenanigans goes on with upgrades.

I suspect you are correct, but have no proof.
