The Ultimate card includes a return economy flight per year, after your qualifiying spend on Qantas.

Mine is just up for renewal now, might ring and see what they'll do. Out of interest what persuaded them? To give an idea I am currently putting about 80-100k/year through mine.

I didn't really have to do much persuading, I just said that I didn't want to pay the annual fee and that I would cancel it if I had to pay the fee. They then waived the fee.

Did you go through to cancellations, or just through to member services?

I went through to member services and discussed it with them, although I did consider just going straight to cancellations. I think either would give you the same response, that is agreeing to the waiver.

Do you get a free flight with the Ultimate?

Yes.

The Ultimate card annual fee includes the cost of a return economy flight (SYD-ADL, SYD- BNE or SYD-MEL) per year , after your qualifiying spend on Qantas. The cost of the flight is $237.50

You can also fly Mel-Brisbane on a red e-deal for $290.00+...I am only paying $250.00 pa for the Qantas Ultimate Platinum card as I also hold a non fee attracting Amex green card

My PER-MEL return flights (on the plat card) have had a cost of over $500 when I have looked them up. So definite value available!

I rang yesterday to take up the offer of the Ultimate card that was sent to me because I no longer need the two free QP invites I get sent each year. After reading this thread I decided to mention that I hadn't decided whether to go for the Ultimate card (for the free flight) or just cancel my current card and go for something cheaper. I was then asked to hold on for a moment to see what they could do for me because I'd been a member since 1985 (I don't leave home without it), and I also have a good spend each year on it.
I was then offered a $250 credit to offset my $195 membership fee that was paid in August. A tidy profit of $55!
