Anyone on the zero waste flight today ?

The virtue signalling from QF seems to be neverending. What about the thousands of tonnes of CO2 coming out of the engines?

I don't think anyone would begrudge any person or business in trying to do the right thing....

But.

A communal jar of vegemite to spread on your soggy something a rather in Y? Gimme a break!

Oh right, so because there will always be pollution/waste we shouldn't try to minimise the waste that is produced. Seems legit...

The claim wasn't 'mininise... ' but 'zero waste'.

If they want to virtue signal, they should go the whole hog and stop flying. It's not like Alan Joyce hasn't grounded the fleet before ;)

Most here already do their bit, loading up en-lounge & opting out of the “full-service” airlines plastic wrapped cheese & biccies.

I think we can all agree that any change, howsoever small, can all make a big difference to sustainability, the environment and our future.
Whilst this news of the QF zero-waste flight is good, I always wonder: Is this being done for cheap PR points or does QF have a genuine desire to improve the environmental impact of its flights?
As we all know, great action is needed to slow down the effects of climate change and a lot of companies use this as a cheap way to gain PR etc.

The actual reasons behind change motivations can be obscure and complex, but if it gets them there, that’s what is important. Just making a start is necessary. Some obvious reasons may be inter alia due to seeing a trend and wanting to lead; a genuine interest at the top; a reluctant dawning that change will be foistered upon them; or just consumables economics.

It is obvious that some are far from convinced that we need to do something to be seen as one of the leaders of trying to turn away from being one of the highest per capital emitters in the world. And yes, I do know why we are that.

No the claim was
"The first-ever commercial flight to produce no landfill waste"

Those are the first 10 words, and if you read further we discover they even offset the carbon emissions.

QANTAS OPERATES WORLD’S FIRST ZERO WASTE FLIGHT

The other comment, like yours, then mentioned exhaust gases as an excuse to do nothing.

So eliminating waste going to landfill from the flight, as per the press release, minimises the total waste from the flight when we include the emission of combustion products.
As I said the fact that other "waste" is produced doesn't mean we shouldn't try to minimise all waste.
Please spare me the ludicrous logical process to denigrate perfectly legitimate attempts to reduce the impact of humans.

Check the thread title. The rest of your post misfollows from that disconnect.

The fact is, that there are other more sustainable methods for overseas travel that don't involve the burning of fossil fuels. A company that doesn't offer such an alternative while undertaking token 'waste reduction' is simply hypocritical. As are those who fly and similarly preach. :). But of course the standard was set by the Dept Climate Change bureaucrats, 10 of which flew first class to the Cancun Climate Change summit. Because when you are saving the planet, you have to be comfy.

Pretty sure Qantas didnt write the thread title here. a thread title, not written by qantas = qantas virtue signalling talk about going down the rabbit hole.

Now, I'm interested in these methods of overseas travel that don't involve burning fossil fuels. I mean captain cook did it, of course. But he didn't have refrigeration, and had to write by candle light. I guess we can ignore the CO2 produced burning the candles as being very small. But it took 8 months to get to Tahiti from the UK. You know, it probably isn't a great use of taxes to pay 10 people to sit on a boat for 8 months to get to cancun.

Anyway, I'm going off track. Please tell us about the overseas travel methods that don't involve burning fossil fuels. I'm intrigued.

Qantas did say on the Instagram that it was 'zero waste flight'

And they clearly qualified that statement. Plus of course they did carbon offset, which addresses your concerns about the other emissions.

Row boats, sail boats, take your pick. I wouldn't do it myself, but it's there for all those serious about 'zero waste'. ;)

Seriously though, I have no problem with any attempt at reducing waste. It's the rank hypocrisy of corporates and individuals who loudly proclaim their 'green' credentials while stuffing up the environment in so many other ways.

They love eagle-chopping wind power but decry hydro power ( hello Bob Brown). And so on.

If sailing isn't their thing, Alan Joyce and all the Qantas executive team could lower their carbon footprint by flying economy. Think they will?
