I'm planning a family trip for the middle of next year, including a thrice-deferred Europe trip with soon-to-expire KrisFlyer miles, and now a friend's wedding in North America. I even managed to get four business seats YVR-SYD with QFF when Qantas published their aspirational calendar last week.

I'm putting together a list of transAtlantic itineraries, for which (across cash and points in many programs) there are plenty of options.

One possibility is Virgin Atlantic Upper Class, which has sufficient space on some routings. I can get Flying Club miles through Amex, but obviously surcharges are high I'm wanting to compare what it might cost with Velocity if international award redemptions come back.

I seem to recall VS was on the same chart as VA and DL, so it would be 49500 for LHR/MAN-BOS/JFK. Obvs the UK APD would account for maybe AUD400-500, but were there surcharges on VS transAtlantic? I think DL was only surcharged for LAX<>SYD.

I just went back and had a look at some old itineraries involving Virgin Atlantic flights booked with Velocity points. It does look like there were a few hundred dollars worth of fuel surcharges per long-haul flight.

Bad of me to say it, but we are still not sure if (under Bain), whether the tie in/liaison between VA and VS will continue.
While its not the same as your situation, in my case, the transfer of FF points between VA and SQ, has still not restarted, who knows if it ever will.
In your (OP's) case/situation, hopefully something gets agreed between VA and VS later on, before the trip.
Don't know what Bain's plans are, FF tie in/liaison wise.
Best of luck anyway.

Yes - that’s what is starting to worry me. We really only have VA points for INT travel, and of course now there isn’t any. They’re just sitting there getting old like me, with no sign that the new VA will have an alliance with anyone for international travel any time soon.
