Hi team,

After many comfortable years in the territory I am mulling a move to SA- most likely Ceduna but given Rex (!) I am interested in the Qantas offering from Port Lincoln and Whyalla, specifically affordability, availability at short notice, delays, general airport service etc.

I have obviously checked fares on random dates and seems somewhat comparable with Darwin but we all know that’s only part of the picture

Thanks in advance for any fault

Delays don't seem excessive on these routes.

Whyalla house prices must be decreasing given the huge uncertainty over the future of its steelworks, with many contractors and staff already laid off.

I have a bit to do with regional SA in my work role and travel a bit on QF and very rarely are there delays or cancellations. Fairly basic airports and none have lounges. Prices as mentioned above are comparable to what you pay ex DRW

And I'd avoid Whyalla right now. Of those three it would be Port Lincoln for me.
Realistically the job I am looking at is in Ceduna but I would drive to either Whyalla or port Lincoln to fly from rather than take Rex. Tossing up where to “live” is another one!

It’s a decent drive to avoid Rex - if you’re driving that far may as well drive to ADL as that gives you much wider range of flights. The Eyre highway is pretty quiet around there lots of Roos on the road during dawn / dusk etc

I know you're asking about air fares and someone suggested driving to Adelaide but there is a ferry

It doesn't save a lot of time but you get to not drive for a bit

And we do the 'almost' Wallaroo to Adelaide drive very frequently. Maybe three times a month. Saw the ferry just Thursday. And the drive through Wallaroo to Port Wakefield to Adelaide being so much easier these days. Just about to do it now in fact. 😂. The airport is on the western side so pretty much tapleys hill road from port road.

Is Rex still going to be around after 30 June

You might have to drive to Port Lincoln 4 hours or Adelaide 8 hours

I did 3 contacts in Whyalla a couple of years before Covid. All were booked no more than 2 weeks out and although I didn’t have to pay I got to see the fare paid and they were reasonable.
Never experienced a delay on the 6 flights and there were good connections in ADL.
I doubt Port Lincoln would be any different though it would have more leisure travelers than Whyalla.

At the moment the Adelaide-based Rex schedule is a bit of a lottery as to whether services are delayed or cancelled, you just need one crew to call in sick or an aircraft to go unserviceable and there can be quite the delay for Rex services to Whyalla, Ceduna, Port Lincoln, Broken Hill in the last few months.

The federal government funding certainly helps with the continuity and certainty of the business. However, I suspect there are now training bottlenecks and pilot/crew shortages that would have become worse since the company went into administration.
