Anyone transferring/withdrawing qantas points?

Hi all,

Similar to the thread over in Virgin - is anyone pre-emptively withdrawing or redeeming points, transferring to partner airlines?

While Qantas isn't shouting about administration like Virgin surely there may be a risk of futur echanges should flight not return for some time, or even a downgrade in the quality of the frequent flyer progam?

if others read my posts in other threads I haven't been particularly thrilled with the service we got in amending our one world itinerary (which now costs more points to redeem). Combined with the normal difficulty of even getting award seats - probably worse now that everyone has pent up points to use on travel once it reopens - the appeal of the points and QFF program appear to be diminishing. If Virgin goes under I assume competition lessens and even less reason for availability to be provided.

Presumably no rush on Qantas now which is why I am pre-emptively wondering if anyone is planning ahead and reducing their points balances?

AFAIK there is no way to transfer QFF points to partner airlines.

Oh no partner airline transfers like virgin's to Krisflyer? Have never tried or checked, so news to me.

Withdrawing - redeem the points for something? Whatever uses up the points really...

I'm quite comfortable leaving my Qantas points where they are for now.

(That said, I am glad I redeemed several hundred thousand points last year.)

I am leaving those points in my Qantas account. I have withdrawn most of them from my Velocity account though ...will see what happens with Qantas - either way I have had a very good run over the last few years and will keep my Plat status until the end of next year.

With hindsight I might have tried harder to redeem my close to 1m points but I couldn't get J award seats for trips I actually wanted to take (rather than grab a J award and build a holiday around that). Having said that I'm comfortable leaving them for now, I think QF is very different to VA and pretty secure.

Value may be dropped at some point in the medium term due to devaluation - but that's regular anyway with the always expected "enhancements"

I see no point(pun intended) in redeeming for toasters or woolies vouchers or whatnot. Terrible value and honestly I am good for kitchen appliances. so.... happy to keep them where they are.

Then again, after being burnt by AN collapse and losing >1m points, I now save enough for my next annual holiday and use them. Sitting on about 550k across 2 accounts a bit shy of my 2021 trip requirement where I'll need 319kx2 for J OWA tickets.

One message you see on these boards from time to time is the idea that “the only good point is a used point”, and it’s pretty solid advice.

When you hold a hoard of unredeemed points, you are essentially an unsecured creditor. Actually you’re below that, since the points can be unilaterally devalued at any time.

They can also be made more difficult to actually redeem for anything remotely useful. It’s pretty rare to get an international flight redemption that is exactly what you want, especially when there’s multiple travellers or a popular route/season.

One thing that I suspect will change after all this, is a lot of people will get off the bandwagon of chasing status and points with airlines, hotel chains etc.

We have close to 800,000 points that were for award flights in July plus remainder but which were refunded due to cancellations. Don't need anything from the shop. Just hope award flights are released, one day.

Happy to leave mine as is. Have almost 500,000 between mine and Mrs Scash's accounts. Also have award booking for July which cost just over 600,000 so depending if we get to go or not may have > 1m points. My brother had 600,000 odd velocity points and decided to redeem about 400,000 on electronics just in case.

I've spent most of mine.

While I'm 100% confident that Qantas as an airline will survive, I'm not so confident about Qantas Frequent Flyer.

And if QFF does survive, I'm expecting points to be devalued especially when used in their usually most cost effective way eg for award seats and upgrades.

That's if award seats and upgrades will even be available at all for a while... Perhaps book now if you can?

Depending on when you were planning to travel your efforts may have been in vain. Last year we redeemed a tad over 2M points for travel in 2020 we wanted to take and mainly in school holidays. So far just over 900K (QF) have been returned and I suspect there maybe another 650K (QF) returned for bookings yet to be cancelled. At the moment I am a little more concerned with the flights booked with points on SQ via KF (approx 550K) that are also at risk cancelation as some of these maybe past the 3 year expiry date. I am focusing on Kris Miles protection so I am happy to leave my QF points in the account and although my current balance is higher than I am normally comfortable with, once I fall from P1 I know it will be more difficult to get the redemptions particularly in school holidays.

My spouse and I burned about 1M velocity between us 130k left. KF 1M points from a trip june/july to Europe will bounce back when canceled. And I used some QFF points to buy a new washing machine as I didn’t want to use cash - still have 700k so happy with the risk as the moment. Warehousing our Amex points at present.
