I'm heading to Bali/Singapore soon and want to increase protection on my iPhone for banking and other financially sensitive information,

Anyone here use a VPN, paid or free, and can make suggestions based on what you have used?

ExpressVPN is a paid service provider. Worked most reliably last month in Asia & Eastern Europe. Took a monthly contract & just cancelled it upon return to Oz.

You could go for the Torguard VPN for cost effective end to end encryption. If your running a major commercial business operating in and around south east Asia they always recommend burner phones. Detach the battery from the unit when not in use and bin it when you are done. For high end users https://phantomencrypt.com/

Nice idea but not running a business while travelling so don't need to go to the lengths you suggest. Since this post I know I'll be staying with friends in Singapore so I can safely use their internet. Bali will be at a chain hotel so will want to use a VPN for there.

i use witopia which is a paid service, it works on iphone & android devices and has a client for PCs and Macs.

quite like it as they have a server that hasn't been blocked by netflix in the US, so it can be used for streaming their US content

Just tried Express VPN on 8 day free trial. 2 out 5 times I tried using it wasn't working. Wasn't terribly impressed with that as looking for good VPN so I can supplement Netflix with Australian TV. Cancelling cable here since they canned BBC entertainment channel, sick to death of the trash from the US and the censorship that goes on.

I've returned from my Asia trip and used IPVanishVPN. It cost me $10/month (can pay month to month) and worked a treat. The app doesn't keep logs either.

EDIT: thanks to everyone who made suggestions here.

I use IPVanish for general use and TorGuard for specific cases when I need a given fixed IP address for company database access etc. Both work well on iPad, iPhone and laptop.

This is not the first time VPN services have been discussed. Do a search with AFF for more. I still use NordVPN ( paid) its great for the whole family to use ie not limited to one person or one computer.
Never had issues with world wide VPN including US Netflix which at the height of Netflix trying to kill swaths of us based ip addresses they suspected of using vPN. Even then all one required to do was update the data on nordvpn data base.

Nord vpn was chosen at the time due to a review in a APC magazine.
