Apple Airtags

We have watches though mine is too old. G’s is new and will work. Thanks!

I've tried to work out the relationship between watch and phone. The watch is an appendage of the phone - so, if they get separated, which is 'home' and which is 'separated'. I gave up, but my watch does tell me when my phone (and all my tags) is away from me, so 🤷‍♂️

you can use FindMyPhone on all your and your partner's devices. Once you have it linked the AirTags to your phone, and your phone etc is authorised to your partner's FindMyPhone then all will appear on both. (And on your iPads.)
I just set up 2 AirTags for Mrs Rugby. They don’t show up on my Find Me as part of Family Sharing, only she can track them. I can see all her other devices and she mine. My initial reading says that AirTags don’t work with Family Sharing - seems an odd feature to have missed.

Yes I have been providing regular feedback to Apple on that matter.

An AirTag can only be seen by the iCloud account it’s set up with. 🤔

Apologies if this has been covered. Just setting up 4 Apple tags now for our overseas flight. If my phone is in my handbag, with the tag, and it gets lost, how do I find it? Should I link my phone to partner’s tag, and vice versa? The iPad may well be in the lost bag too. Am I missing something obvious here?
You should be able to find your devices (and your partner’s, if he’s allowed “find my” to track him) by looking at the devices tab in “find my”. His location (actually the location of his primary device) is under the people tab. But, the items tab will only show tags that have be registered to your phone. Anti stalking measure perhaps.

The relationships of the various Apple devices to each other is somewhat murky, but as best I can tell, the Apple tags will happily use any Apple device that happens to pass near them. Tile was nowhere near as flexible…though at the time it was the only player in town.

Make sure that you’re able to access your Apple ID account (www.icloud.com). You can also find devices like your phone or ipad there.

ok. Works for me. Try turing off sharing on bother phone/devices etc then re-enable. Maybe an iCloud issue as below.

Ok a bit of work to do but so far it’s working well…. nice to see the bags on our flight from Bris to Newcastle. We will fine tune the rest before taking off to Singapore in a few days.

Ant not only for luggage - we have been trialling Airtags on Electric Bicycles where we insert AirTag inside alloy frame tube - they have tracked perfectly.

Quite a conundrum though - for a few years we have been trying to develop an immobilising system into the electric circuit or at least a tracking device to enhance security and in turn drive sales as potential customers have a greater degree of perceived security.

Then along comes AirTag and instant solution - BUT - here is where the conflict arises - we have a substantial market replacing stolen Electric Bicycles through a number of Insurance Companies and the last thing we want is track-ability and return of stolen items - decisions decisions

Worked great for me on a recent trip to the US. Internal flight on AA from LAX to Austin … I knew before anyone else my suitcase never got on the plane and was still in LA!
Obsessively tracking then for the rest of the trip the location of my suitcase before and after all other flights!!

Which is similar logic to companies that give us planned obsolescence.

To answer anyone who is still wondering what happens if you leave your phone behind - this is what happens for me ( phone name = Freycinet).

And yes I did take the photo with my phone. Alert stays on the watch until you dismiss it 😊

the app also works on the iPad and tells you where all your devices registered to your apple account are. I can see where three of my iPads and the Apple Watch are and two phones plus the AirTags.
Does www.icloud.com show Airtag locations?

I dont have iphone but the wife has. So i figure if i go travelling, i can just use her Airtags and if necessary login to icloud website to find my stuff if she wont get out of bed or off the phone to help.

Tip of the day. If doing this dont put an airtag on yourself.

I got a Chipolo wallet card to compliment the Airtags. I posted a pic of it up-thread. As the name implies, it's the size of a credit card (but thicker) and lives in your wallet. Apple things can talk to it, so wallet chipolo is tracked just like other Airtag items.

My experience is that its a bit flaky. Say I'm driving, and stopping at a shop, say, then the post office, I will get an alert "Wallet left behind" often when I start driving again each time, notwithstanding my wallet has remained in my pocket the whole time (I use the CC linked to my Apple Watch to pay everything on the card). The alerts go to my phone (with me) and are relayed to my watch.

Seems like the Chipolo is sensing movement away from the parked position after it and my phone have been walked around the shop, and hasn't sensed the wallet very near by.

I've tested several times recently and it always gives me an alert if the wallet IS left behind, so it works as intended, but is giving some false positives. The false positives resolved each time by me reaching down and feeling my wallet in my pocket, so not a big thing, but worth noting.

An update. The Chipolo card is definitely not working properly. Now, I will get an alert whenever I start to drive off with both my wallet and my phone with me and I will also get an alert randomly while I'm driving. It still alerts when genuinely separated, and the other alerts are easily ignored, so its still fulfilling its function, but something is up.

BTW, @TheRealTMA , my Ring is now working better - gives a ring/alert within a second or two of real time :)

No! I wuz wrong! I thought one could see Air Tags via family sharing but no you can't see air tags on another phone / ipad. I thought I could but my wife's iPhone was logged in using my account. Logging in on her account, my iPhone and iPad are visible in FindMy but not the Air Tags.

Sorry.

FYI you can view Tile tags from any device logged into the Tile account to which the Tiles are linked. I can track from both my phone and 4G tablet - when logged in on my phone, it tracks my 4 tiles and my tablet. When logged in on tablet it tracks 4 Tiles and my Phone. I have not found any limit to how many devices you can track your Tiles from.

I’ve just started getting that too with my Chipolo. Driving yesterday and twice it said I’d left my keys behind and they were only 30cm from my phone

As many AirTags as you have linked/registered can also be seen from any devices that are linked together. i.e. My iPhone, iPad7 and iPad5 for instance can all see all four AirTags. Just not from someone else's phone or iPad if I log in on theirs. That was the point being made.
