Use the iPad preset; i've never had any issue ripping stuff into my iPad.

The alternate is to use a program that allows you to download images to your iPad and play it like it's a local file.

nlagalle has an App (from the store, I can't remember its name) that will let you do it.

I use the iskysoft imedia converter (They have Mac and Windows versions) and it works really well, i found it even faster and better than handbrake. for $50 is a really cheap investment. .. Also if you find and "like" them on facebook, they often have giveaways and cheap deals. I received my full copy for $0 through this during a give away promotion.

In fact, I just checked and they have the Video converter Ultimate ..... on sale via the facebook offer for $41.30... its even better featured than the imedia converter..... Hope this helps :D

Not that keen to hack my ATV at the moment - it works and works fine. Re-encoding is not a major hassle just a gripe.

But even with hacking ATV to add other software you will still have access to standard ATV functionalities. So the risk on this is small.

My wife, who is on her Nokia N95, already ask me whether to get iPhone, I told her to wait for iPhone 5 come out. At the end it seems people just like how Apple design their products.

It's called AVPlayerHD and you can play AVI's, MKV's etc.

The app allows you to upload files via a web client or FTP. You can also copy files over via the iTunes file sharing.

The app is about $2.50 but well worth it.

2 things on it. Can occasionally crash the iPad and when you sync it backs up your movies. Future versions will allow you to exclude them from the backup.

+1 for AVPlayerHD. Main reason I prefer this to the built-in iPad video player are:

  • Handles most formats, no need to transcode to mp4
  • Lets you put videos into folders and sub-folders - great if you have multiple seasons of the same show
  • You can delete videos from the iPad once you've watched them
It has lots of other playback adjustments, but these are the three things I bought it for. Well worth the $3 or whatever it cost :)

iPad - who'd have thought this would be a winner? The Blackberry Playbook is now a better device, but with the range of Apple Apps, who will buy one.

I got the new BB playbook a few weeks ago. I was in the market for a new phone as my previous one was really giving me the sihts. I went into one of the big telcos and there was the BB playbook bundled with a BB Bold (9780 I think) all for less that I was previously paying for my old phone and contract.

The only real issue that I have with it is the lack of native e-mail, but I can easily work around that with web based email and the BB Bridge to the phone. Also the tethering to my phone when out of wireless range allows access to the internet without the need for a seperate sim.

I have not been overseas with it yet but it worked really well on a recent trip to the Eastern States, even the word programme performed well (allowances made for fat fingers).

On a seperate note, and not directed at you Browski, if your phone was so bad that you wanted to throw it against the wall why would you then wait for the next phone from the same maker? I understand that there are developments alwasy being made in terms of reliabilty but from what I can tell iPhones of every generation have had issues. At least you could make calls with previous generations though.

FWIW, my previous phone was a Nokia and I swore that it would be a very long time until I went back to them after the issues that I, and my wife had with our phones.

I must be one of those infidels who does not own, has never owned, and has no great desire to own, any Apple products. In fact the more popular, or revolutionary, a product becomes the less I have the desire to use it.

And by the way I cannot understand why anyone would queue for a gadget. Apple or otherwise....

With you on this from a personal viewpoint JohnK (especially when it's at midnight or whatever) - I'd be more likely to fly to the moon, but I guess different strokes etc...

FWIW,i did go for the BB Playbook. Love the Bridge to do email but leaves no footprint on the Playbook. My biggest issue at the moment is finding a micro HDMI cable to watch video on hotel tvs.

Any tips on getting around the restrictions that hotels put on having other inputs to TVs? I have a RCA cable for the iPad that worked well in one hotel but I haven't been able to bypass. He locks that other hotels have on additional inputs.
