Are A380's safe enough to fly? [hairline cracks found in wings]

thinking about MEL they have maybe 10 immigration counters? so an extra 100 pax = about an extra 10 people lining up per immigration officer... at about 30 seconds per interview? So maybe an extra 5-10 minutes queuing? But then you hit quarantine - those lines with an extra 150 people can be a bit of a drag.

Surely that's more a problem with customs and quarantine, and the quite hideous way that they think they can (should) treat people, than it is an aircraft problem.

A first hand quote....person had once worked for an airline, and now with customs, in answer to a question about how they liked the job..."great, 'cos now I don't have to be nice to anyone". Said it all.

true... looking at MEL again, the airport is clearly one problem (limited space to increase the number of immigration desks) but then even if there were more, would there be budget for more staff? I guess new technology is the other short term fix... the more people on e-passports the better.

so if we accept that the airport ain't going to get bigger (for now) then at some point the number of planes, and the size of those, does become an issue.

Soooooooo - we are booked to fly New York to Frankfurt mid-March with Singapore Airlines on the A380.

Is anyone else nervous about flying in these planes?

I sure as heck am!

Booked to fly MEL-LHR-MEL not worried at all..

Are the A380's any less safe to fly on than the 737? considering that the 737 is the most popular commercial aircraft yet has been the subject
of much speculation about build quality over the last few years I would think that more people would be concerned about flying on that yet
737's fly millions of people around the world every year.
I don't have an issue with flying on either aircraft as long as correct maintenance procedures are followed.
Cheers

Couldnt agree more I have several flights coming up on the A380 and have no hesitation in flying on them especially as these small cracks will lead to more thorough inspections of the aircraft.

It is rather like are you better flying on an airline that just had a crash or one that hasnt had one yet? :!::p

Not really no, am booked to LHR in April and SIN return in August

I am intending to book on QF (or maybe SQ) SYD-LHR-SYD in July. I am more concerned about a combination of terrorists on the train, Asian bird flu, bush fires and a Tsunami on the same day than I am about A380 safety.

Let's face it, flying is a risk you take, at the end of the day you are sitting in a cylinder going very fast and a long way off the ground. You could walk out of your house tomorrow morning and get run over by a truck. The best advice is to be in business or first class, at least you get to go out in a comfortable seat and a belly of good food.

Yep nothing ive seen or heard has scared me away from the a380.

Sent from my GT-I9100 using AustFreqFly

No, not at all. I have 2 bookings on the A380 due up in February and July, and I can't wait for them!

Agreed! and the chances of any of those are small anyway

Flew it (QF) a few weeks ago, and due for a couple more (also QF) in April. I am taking some duct tape and a tube of Tarzan's Grip with me just in case.

I would prefer wings sans cracks, but have to put my faith in the 'experts'. :-|
