I did research this a fair bit and I decided I was happy to:

Quote - The federal government sold the app to the public as the key to easing restrictions across the country, however last week when the Senate debated the legislation for the app, foreign minister Marise Payne admitted the number of downloads of the app was not a consideration for national cabinet in the easing of restrictions.

  • Haha
Reactions: DC3
Heard on the news this morning that NSW are not able to use the downloaded data from the app for contact tracing due to technical issues (at present). This was in an interview with Ms Berejiklain who did not deny this and said their manual contract tracing was sufficient at this time. Maybe this is "common" knowledge but it was the first I had heard it. (Not sure about other states).

Oops - sorry - did not click on link in previous post - apologies.

Sure but we all knew that was a furphy.

The article title is a Furphy. As the 'lockdowns' are eased, over time the app should become far more useful.

Also, the 'technical' issue portion with which more than 60% of the article is applied indicate the author is trying to justify the title rather than being objective.

the question is why only still 6 million is downloading the app according to fairfax news

As serfty mentioned, the app is to be used to track any outbreaks once restrictions are released. In SA in particular once borders are changed, an outbreak in Victoria would be helpful for SA returnees where it might not get reported in SA. . Early days yet. A shame the media jumps on the headings and not the substance. Slack journalism.

Because currently in SA we have had just one (historical and not infectious) positive in over 31 days. No active cases in about 10 days. Until we get some freedom there's not much point yet.

That is a nul comment in relation to this thread as this app is indeed functional.
Well, no it’s not. Sorry. Even the government is now quietly backtracking and refusing to discuss a lot of issues with it.

It’s very unfortunate but the app sucks. Such a missed opportunity.

on iPhones it’s basically useless. And the developers knew this wouldn’t work because the Bluetooth stack is in the privileged part of the kernel and not available fully unless an app is in the foreground, on an unlocked phone, and running. The problem was known from other apps in other countries. The developers essentially sold the Government a pup and there was no one competent left to test properly or to work this out.

Fake news alert 🚨

I posted similar in another thread but I still feel that there is a business opportunity being missed here.
Ignore phones and promote a dedicated social interaction device. Compared with the tasks a phone tackles, social interaction is really basic. Supply a simple device, free of charge, tax payer funded. Leave at home if you wish, but otherwise, it'll provide a clean and consistent record of social interactions.
The problem with the app is that it engages with people's phones and those phones are too close to personal life for any sane person to let the Government within cooee.
