Why not replace the Air Lingus flight with a Iceland Flight
LHR-RKV-JFK for GBP283 = AUS$466
Saves a little cash .

Total Cost $1728aud

Im being a little more adventurous but still can't crack the $1500 mark

1. 04 Oct Darwin - Singapore Jetstar 61 (1820) $169.00
2. 05 Oct Singapore - Kuala Lumpur (TRAIN) $31.00
3. 06 Oct Kuala Lumpur - Stansted Air Asia $378.00
4. 07 Oct Heathrow - New York - Kuwait Airways 101 (1530) $444.00
5. 08 Oct New York - Los Angeles - (BUS) - $125.00
6. 11 Oct Los Angeles - Taipei - China Airlines 7 (0115) +
7. 12 Oct Taipei - Kuala Lumpur - China Airlines 721 (0820) $559.00
8. 14 Oct Kuala Lumpur - Singapore - (TRAIN) - $31.00
9. 16 Oct Singapore - Darwin Jetstar 62 (2220) $130.00

Grand total AUD $1867.00 / USD $1742.84

I need to find a $242.00 saving - hmmm, hand luggage only perhaps?

Just looking at Alanslegal vs mine, I think we can crack $1500...

Anat0l - you up to it? ;)

hmmm. i'd be tempted to join you on this, however i will most likely be in Delhi getting ready for the Commonwealth games. I also suspect this may affect some pricing as they games run from the 2nd to the 14th October.

Now if it was in November......

I have to admit getting within the USD 1500 is very tough!

I think I can knock off only a few dollars here or there....not much more. Even if you went carry-on only, still wouldn't make the mark by long shot.

I'm trying to get all major crossings, but of course therein lies the killer (in order of difficulty from easiest, Kangaroo, followed by Trans-Atlantic, followed by Trans-Pacific). I guess if Ryanair start flying Trans-Atlantic, then that might either cause prices to fall further, or gives a lower cost option across (albeit by many accounts using an airline I wouldn't want to go near!)

If there was a sale on we might have a fighting chance, but using only rack rates then it's quite difficult.

If I flew this, I'd have to keep it to early October; late October is Star Mega Do II.

Total Cost $1728aud

Or Air Berlin STN-DUS-JFK for $410 AUD. Total cost $1672 AUD ..$1562 USD

Now you're USD 62 overbudget.

Cutting out JQ's baggage allowance from there (at AUD 20 per leg), that knocks off USD 37.36.

AirAsiaX baggage to UK is RM 39 prebooked for 15 kg; in USD that is USD 12.22. Ditto another USD 9.40 (RM 30) for the SIN-KUL sector on AirAsia (unless you take the train instead; more expensive however).

Add all that up and you're only about USD 3 over the budget limit, although the rules have been broken.

As a small side note, how does the route JFK-TPE go? Does it cross the Pacific, cross the Atlantic and Eurasia or the North Pole?

I suspect over the top, done quite a few JFK-ITM flights that way. Occasionally they route via a refuel in ANC.

I used this site TripPlanner and got quote of $1628 USD for
BKK-FRA
FRA-LHR
LHR-MSY
MSY-LAX
LAX-MEL
No flight details included and I need to get a cheap MEL-BKK fare but I'm getting there, will get back to you.

I'm working on it, LCC's asll the way, except for the transpac part, thats where I get stuck

Need a combination of a Jetstar sale ex-HNL plus some sale fares to HNL ex-LAX for that to work. At the moment $300 LAX-HNL and then $400 HNL-SYD it not really palatable for this exercise...

Maybe if i re-arange a few other things I could use the Air Pacific via Nadi, its one of the cheaper options

Cheap, but still a significant cost. (At least 50% of budget). The routing -NAN vs. -NAN - Australia has negligible price difference.

The China Airlines deal that Alanslegal and munitalP used is very good value.

is backtracking allowed (provided it doesn't infringe on the no multiple visits to any one city rule?)
