Arrangements for return of overseas students announced

In addition the Federal Minister for Education has stated that until the University’s get domestic bums on seats at Universities no OS students have a chance. Then the thing people have forgot is China has banned any Chinese student from returning to Australia.

But there are still many students from SE Asia and the subcontinent wanting pursue studies in Australia. China was a significant chunk of the foreign student income, but certainly not all of it.

Still many donestic students waiting to study as well.

Why assume students want to come to Aus? They now know that once in, they could well be trapped, unable to get back to family in an emergency (for example). There are plenty of welcoming countries with excellent courses available and with a sense of compassion are reasonableness.

Yes I wonder if we have killed the golden goose with our Fortress Australia approach.

If the government has the capacity to do more, it must do more.

You said it and I couldn't agree more. But the government will not lift a finger unless there is a $ sign, or political pressure/backlash. Currently there is no political pressure to expedite repatriation of the Aussies stranded overseas unfortunately.

That is an excellent point. I think our educational sector is sliding down the same slope as our car manufacturing sector did a few years ago... :-(

It has nothing to do with the NSW Treasurer but the Federal Minister of Immigration and Health. To my knowledge the request is still sitting in their respective in trays.
I think the media event needs to be planned first, before the policy is considered.

Apparently in addition to the SA program, other states will be announcing their own programs shortly which is great news.

As previously posted on the other trhreads discussing this the proposed location for the first lot of NSW Uni Student Quarrantine, it is a new build in Redfern which is as yet unoccupied. Once they complete their quarrantine the students have to move out either to cmapus, other student accomodation or private rental.

It bugs me that they have to try and spin this to say the accommodation is 'not suitable to anyone else but students'.

It's true that student accommodation is small and designed for solo people... but we're talking about quarantine, not accommodation suitable for long term use by couples or families. Plans for the dedicated quarantine facility in Victoria have rooms smaller than many student places, and plenty of people in Japan live in apartments that are smaller!

It will provide studio, twin share and five bedroom clusters all of which share bathrooms except the studios. I guess if there’s not many studios it wouldn’t be appropriate for other types of quarantine
