Arriving into MEL on QF 70 connecting to QF9 to PER

I'm curious how this will work. I'll be arriving from DEL on QF70 with a connection to PER on QF9. So obviously arriving and departing MEL from the international terminal. I'll be travelling HLO.

Normally when you take QF9 as a domestic flight you get the little sticker. So I'm sure I can clear immigration exit go check in and clear security again. What happens if I don't and just head straight to the lounge/boarding gate after disembarking from QF70? Is this even possible?

QF9 from Melbourne arrives in the evening so they may not have anyone at border control to process you into Australia at Perth T3, which is why they may have needed you to clear border control in Melbourne, otherwise you would have been stuck in Perth T3 until QF72 arrives at midnight.

Border Control has to be there for international departures. Maybe they send one staffer over the few arrivals? Anyway, a moot point. QF9 is not daily. QF flights are via SIN from PER or east coast cities instead.
 
Thanks for this updated information. It would have been useful for me next March AKL-PER. However, Qantas has cancelled QF9 that day and I have been changed to a domestic flight. So clear immigration in MEL and no access to the QF Lounge. 🥲

QF has cancelled a few QF9 MEL-PER on me. No one knows why. Perhaps the 787 is being used elsewhere as domestic flights can handle the international passengers just as easily. I just want to use the QF lounge!

On Sunday's flight the 787 was replaced with a A330. So not cancelling, but aircraft swap.

I do wonder what would have happened if I hadn't gone to the lounge and just presented at the boarding gate?

They still have the immigration booths manned by Border Force to check ID and boarding passes for the orange sticker. The time where I did clear immigration at Perth there was also a customers officer who knew that there was one pax (me) who needed to be checked.

My flight is not just an aircraft replacement (B737 no less!) but no longer QF9. There is no QF9 that day. I was moved to QF779.

So besides missing out on the F lounge (major disappointment), I have paid J for a B737!

Oh! I should plead ignorance and just go to the F lounge on arrival from AKL without clearing immigration? Don’t give me ideas!

No D sticker in an int to "int" flight, at least not normally. International to Domestic as International confuses the hell out of customs / airline staff.

Hell Domestic as International can confuse people, I was very nearly was not let "back into Australia" after a BNE-SYD flight where outbound customs forgot to stamp the D sticker.

Well I certainly hope the process has been streamlined in the 9 months since this thread!

Tomorrow I'm flying AKL-MEL-PER with QF9 once I arrive in Melbourne. I have 3 hours so even if I have to clear customs, re-check my luggage and re-clear customs as a 'D' it should be fine but I just don't want to get into any issues with clueless staff telling me I've done the wrong thing!

Hopefully staff in AKL are across the requirements 🤞

If you are flying on the same ticket AKL-PER, like every international flight your luggage will be booked through to Perth. In Melbourne you remain airside. You are not continuing on a domestic flight. You clear immigration in Perth. Well, that’s how it should work.

I have since flown MEL-PER on QF9 twice. There were no problems going through immigration in Perth as a domestic passenger; I used a separate lane. International passengers used the passport ID lanes.

Just because that's how it should work, doesn't mean that's how it works. As you'll see upthread, MEL airport seem to have changed their mind with needing to clear immigration there. A royal PITA :(

Do ABF staff get as confused when people do this sort of thing as Japanese border staff did?

JL used to operate a NRT-KIX "international" flight to connect US arrivals to Osaka. I booked it one trip to fly from Tokyo to Osaka. Check in staff got confused and looked up their manuals, then found the needed paperwork (the JP version of the AU D sticker). 3 copies of a form, one for NRT immigration, one for KIX immigration and one for KIX customs.
Everyone who got their copy of the form was confused, but let me through, until customs in Osaka. The concept that I was flying domestically on an "international" flight nearly blew the customs officers mind. He didn't want to see the "D" paperwork, couldn't find a KIX immigration stamp in my passport and demanded a bag check, and only when seeing the green edges on the bag tag did he finally understand what was going on.

As expected upon checking in at AKL I was met with a blank stare when I asked what the process is and my bag was checked into MEL, I was advised I would need to collect my bag and re-check in for the MEL-PER leg. So not a smooth process but after reading other people's experiences I was expecting it.

No biggie, I've got 3 hours to connect (assuming no delays on my first flight) so hopefully doesn't cut into my F lounge time 😍

Were you able to do the int - int transfer, or were you made to clear Aust immi in MEL, and go out and get dumped to a 737?

Alas, the dream of a seamless international-to-international transfer was not possible, and I was required to clear customs in MEL, re-check my bag, and obtain my onward boarding pass. But on reflection, this is probably the most seamless it's going to get, and I would probably prefer to be screened in MEL than PER just because there are more staff and PAX, so there is less likelihood of being scrutinised and held up.

And no equipment swaps, so I was able to bask in the glory of the 787 coast-to-coast in business on a domestic hop, which is truly the best way to take that journey.

Here's what happened:

I had heard there were many delays and flight cancellations at MEL and SYD due to high winds, single runway OPS, and low controller numbers, so I was bracing myself for a long day of champagne in the lounge. So I was happy when my inbound QF154 from AKL landed 17 minutes ahead of schedule! However, then we sat on the apron for 17 minutes waiting for our assigned gate to become free, so we ended up disembarking right on time at 12 midday.

Cleared immigration and collected my bag, I was one of the first bags out, so no queues at quarantine. Headed upstairs to try the QF curbside check-in suite, which I have never done before. Arrived there at +23 minutes since disembarkation. Quizzed the staff there if the correct process was followed and got two different answers, started a debate as one agent said as it was on the same ticket, my bag should've been checked through to my final destination, but the other agent said MEL had stopped doing that, but they were both royally confused and still not 100% sure.

Headed for fast track security and 'domestic customs', no queue, so my orange sticker was promptly stamped, and I walked past the hordes of PAX milling around the terminal due to the delays from the morning, which were still impacting operations.

Arrived at the QF first lounge at +39 minutes since disembarkation and settled in.

Despite the delays, my onward QF9 boarded on time and was ready to depart on time; however, several PAX had to be offloaded, so we ended up departing 11 minutes late. There were still gale-force winds at MEL, and our 787 wasn't phased, with a beautifully smooth take-off and uneventful flight.

Disembarked at PER 3 minutes behind schedule, and arriving passengers doing the 'domestic transfer' were directed to 'domestic customs' and baggage claim, and no further quarantine checks. So I was curbside within 5 minutes.

Overall, while nowhere near seamless, the transfer in MEL wasn't a huge impost. However, I would allow several hours to connect if you're not flying at the pointy end.
