Article: Is Airline Status Worthwhile If Flying Business Class?

Back to topic. I’m not flying in the back anymore at all because a. I’m not 20 anymore, b. life’s too short for unnecessary misery/ stinginess in the wrong places and c. I don’t want to (and lucky enough usually do not need to). However, I still find status very worthwhile: I know Qantas is a contentious topic these days but looking at the alternatives here in the Australian market, I’m not too sure there are any. Don’t come with Virgin (please just don’t- you’ll never see me join the “fun club” and they’re now owned by Bain Capital- even “evil” Allen will never beat that). And I just got Gold with SQ but you know what- service on the phone, award availability in anything but cattle class (pretty much zero as far as I can see and I mean zero zero nothing) and even my most recent flight experiences with SQ itself: Pretty dismal and quite honestly an utter disappointment given the reputation SQ once had (might change post Covid but so might Qantas). So what’s left? Some odd ball airlines with *Alliance or Sky: Good luck earning any points or transferring your Amex reward points so speaking of golden handshakes: Worse with them than with QF if you live down here.

So that leaves Qantas after all. Works for me as, see above, I rather don’t fly at all than doing the nasty back of the plane to myself. At the same time I am admittedly too stingy to pay full price QF J Domestic (or at the recently even more over-inflated priced internationally, for that matter) so reward seats/upgrades domestically are of real value to me. Likewise, if anything goes wrong, you usually get taken better care of (usually…) and after attempt two or three you “even” get through to Hobart or at least Auckland who might be able to actually help. Then there’s obviously also the First lounge which is more a nice (lovely) to have and, probably most important, the benefits on other OneWorld carriers: F lounges in, say, Tokyo and London? Tick, though admittedly the latter are pretty meh like anything these days on the rainy rock- still better than J through, needless to say. And the added luggage allowance has been a true, life-changing god sent whenever I had to literally move continents for work.

Finally- and the opportunities have gotten rarer but I still hope things will get back to “normal” post Covid: I had some of my very best flight experiences with upgrades to First or redemption seats in First, the latter quite a few times on Emirates, shower included. And of maybe 20 upgrade “lottery” requests from QF J to F, I think I only got two denied ever- and I’m only a lowly Platinum without the One. So- yea, totally worth it. And keeping my status is easy enough if flying full paid Business anyway (on carriers like JAL or Qatar rather, as much as possible) and points themselves just rain on you if you live in Australia and are a bit diligent about earning them (credit card churn, drinking lots of wine, oups, from Qantas and ordering any expensive stuff through the Qantas mall- really not too much of a handcuff if you ask me).

Everyone is different and circumstances are as well, I get that. And if someone has a REALLY good suggestion for a *Alliance or Sky scheme that’s worth considering instead of QF, I’m all ears. But in the meantime, Qantas Platinum seems minimal commitment with decent benefits to me. Especially if/when those upgrade and reward opportunities come back again.

I'm fairly new to the points + FF game & the pointy end of a plane.
I started with buying points lifemiles & Alaska and was able to book flights including First class with Cathay as a (still unknown) birthday present for Mum who has always flown economy.
Thanks to Covid that didn't happen unfortunately.

Since Covid I have done some CC churning.
I also bought Finnair points in their buy points & get status promotion and currently have platinum status (OWE) in their program until the end of next year. To be used to fly myself & others syd-per-syd in QF business for the price of economy which would be happening anyways.
Its unlikely I would have taken advantage of this promotion or as much as I did if not for turning 40 at the end of this year.

I'm off to Paris for 2 weeks at the end of October for my birthday (40). At the end of my trip I have 2 nights at the Park Hyatt by buying Hyatt points for less than the cost of 1 night which is currently AUD$2000 per night when I will be staying and booking before the devaluation.
Would I pay $2000 per night to stay somewhere, almost certainly never BUT when the cost is less than $1400 in total for 2 nights to celebrate the end of a trip for my 40th then that's a whole different story.

Using Qantas points I was able to book syd-lhr-cdg QF1 and BA when Qantas did a mass release earlier in the year. This will be my first time flying business.
On the way back I cleared a balance I had in Asia miles cdg-hnd-syd JL with the flight to Tokyo in First Class. I have back up award flights in both directions just in case.
Even though I am flying business having OWE status opened up more seats to choose from & I was able to select 13A on QF1 and 3K on my JL flight into Syd.

Next year I'm looking at a short trip to Europe all in business Syd/mel-lax QF then lax-hel-lhr-? AY and back to Australia flying SQ.
Having OWE status, by the end of next year I will (hopefully) have visited first lounges in syd/mel sin lhr hnd lax hel.
I know that flying business I would have access to business class lounges. Having OWE I will have access to first lounges as well.

Its unlikely I would attempt to get status in the future given the intention to use points for business when flying long haul (or premium economy with JAL if needed).

Cheers all

I've come around to this thinking as well. Hard to say whats happened. Just got old and tired? Maybe, but I also think that there have been significant value reductions in the whole points and status game over the last decade which makes me wonder about the real value proposition of golden handcuffs.

Have learned through harsh reality that storing points is a mugs game, earn them and spend them is my current thinking and keep as many as you can in the most flexible scheme available. For me thats Amex.

I'm going to be pushed into a trip early next year that really I wouldn't otherwise be taking because of a large haul of points in Krisflyer that are going to expire because of their 3 years thing. I think they've been generous over the covid period, don't get me wrong, but having points expire just isn't conducive to a points hoarding/saving strategy. Had my hand forced in this case because of the great Amex devaluation from a couple of years ago - just more evidence for earning and spending rather than hoarding. I've learned my lesson.

More likely going forward, for both hotels and flights is going to be finding the BFOD and BHOD and use points and transfers to enhance those bookings in whatever is the most appropriate way. No handcuffs, can take advantage of competitive pricing and add just a little sugar with points based upgrades or whatever.

I agree with you. I don’t change my purchasing behaviour in favour of status or points. I use them for gift cards etc. /donate…preCovid I used them for some flights domestically but have no interest now - I’ll pay. I pay for international in any case. YMMV

I used to play the game with a lot of energy and attention - the game _did_ sway my purchasing decisions and I both benefitted and suffered at the hands of the golden handcuffs.

HH has generously allowed me to retain Diamond throughout COVID but I've not been inclined to spend time in HH hotels domestically more than a couple of times ... The HH in Aus are fine, for what they are, but the last somewhat special hotel seems to have gone away with the revamp of the Parmelia in Perth - its now just another boring hilton even given the addition of an EL. For the price asked by Hilton and Doubletree in Australia I'm just not buying - even given Diamond handcuffs (smile). I'm finding Bonvoy hotels are much better quality - though more expensive ... I'll never get any worthwhile status with Bonvoy, but there it is. Want a suite? Buy one (p+p if needed). HH Aus stopped giving me suites as a Diamond upgrade a long time ago. EL and breakfast generally come with suite bookings so status is of almost no value.

Had Plat with the old VA but nothing now. I've got a huge haul of points with them, but its 737 everywhere and I hate these narrow bodies with a passion. I will decline any offer on a 737 Max and business class on these narrow bodies is a joke regardless.

My last few domestic flights have been QF J, on points, so I haven't yet had to deal with the kiosks. No status with QF but again, in line with this thread, I doubt it would make any difference. Want J? Pay for J (in points or money, whatever works) and the perks you want come with the ticket.

I think the most useful (only) hotel loyalty program I have is Leaders. Hotels everywhere but Australia (except for one new one Jacaloupe on Mornington Penninsula) / free breakfast/5000USD spend per year gets Sterling Club (late checkouts /easy free night and other benefits. I like their hotels

I’ve noticed recently a bunch of posts by peeps travelling in J with no or low status and having difficulty selecting seats because the majority are blocked until T-80 or until checkin opens (depending on the airline).

Is that enhancement creeping out across more airlines?

My guess would be yes. There has to be something for status holders and status devaluations across the board in the last several years leave precious little in the way of truly useful perks.

This thread is about the value of status when flying J anyway - my vote has been: Not much. When I had status with both airlines and hotel chains it mostly provided value for when I was frequently travelling on otherwise cheap tickets. Status could boost you a little bit to help with an otherwise ordinary experience and I enjoyed it thoroughly (airport and EL lounges in particular).

I'm not flying for business now (so far) and my travel is leisure - a whole different beast. I'm looking for the highest class of service I can reasonably get at the most reasonable price. The golden handcuffs of status don't appear to be working in this space, not for me anyway.

Exactly, so this trend is a positive enhancement for status holders. They get to pick the best seats available at the time of booking. Whereas someone with no or low status - regardless of whether they‘re using their accrued points, buying points or just the occasional work/leisure trip in J get the dregs. Including the back row of the J cabin just in front of the screaming baby in the basinet in the first row of whY.

Screaming babies can be found n J as well..I encountered one on Wednesday night, in row 1on a 333. (Thank God for earplugs!)

One advantage of being able to access Emerald City on the QF A388s!

Otherwise, at least you might have better options to place yourself away from the J bassinet seats if you have status.

I wanted to revive this and get everyone's thoughts on this a year a bit down the road. With the landscape changing, I'm finding myself enjoying status runs less and less. Perhaps I'm getting to a stage where I value my time more rather than just flying around.

Whilst I would probably still travel just as much, I would spend less time trying to construct intricate fares to maximise SC/TP/Mileage and fly A-B.

What are others thoughts on this?

With more and more airlines rolling out “unbundled” fares, the divide between status and just a J ticket is increasing.

QF LTG (or equivalent) would be a sensible part of retirement planning.

Indeed. You can pay for a seat and get priority boarding with minimal extra cost.

I'm actually have LTG with QF already but I'm currently chasing after BA LTG (LTOWE) and it seems/feels a bit silly given the marginal differences. I may be better off just obtaining WP year on year at a lower cost.

Varies by airline if you can pay and not always stacks up if you’d paid the unbundled fare at the outset. But they’re great for status holders or those who just want a better seat (eventually).

QR P class - no lounge but OWS+ / VA SG+ free lounge most of the time. Yes, you can pay in DOH.

AY - I’ve lost track of what you don’t get without status.

BA - £££’s for a seat in any class without status.

Yeah, if someone else is paying I’d be going for it. Alas, too late for me.

It’s actually not that hard to keep QF WP if you have modest means and time through regular flying (and follow the tips here).

But coming back to my earlier comment, QF SG/LTG (or equivalent) is sufficient to fill the gaps on unbundled fares.

I'd generally say no if you're doing business class flights.

For the most part the lounges are nice but not "pay and do status runs" nice. You could use one of the priority pass lounges if you really want somewhere and your ticket doesn't include it.

Also this approach allows you to be a lot more alliance agnostic.

Yes, that’s a work around for the regular flyer (whether or not in J international). Not a lot of use in most cases flying Oz domestic whY but not an issue as per the point of this thread (ie J BP gives domestic lounge access - for now).

I personally think it's mad to status run, but especially if you fly J anyway and get 90% of the perks by class of service.

What are you thinking of status running for? If it is P1 (going by your profile), I'd say not worth it — the perks are just too unreliable and insignificant.

If it is to go for WP, the argument is more finely balanced because WP actually unlocks substantially more J travel (by points) through the seat request feature.

If it is go for Virgin status, I'd say no — status only holds marginal value over J for them.
