Article: Qantas Auckland Lounge Upgrade: The End of an Era

Completely agree here too. If anything they would close the whole lot down and either dump passengers to the NZ lounge or the EK lounge depending on timings and lounge arrangements. It would be nice to visit this lounge one last time so that I can have a frame of reference between the old and new lounge.

Do they allow flowers, wreaths and candles through INTL security at AKL? I may have to hold a vigil outside the lounge in remembrance of the only QF lounge outside Australia that gives HBA a run for its money! 😂
It was never like HBA. Much better food and drink, and a separate business corner. Candles only, but probably not beeswax.

Do you have a link? The re-modelling has been on the cards for a while. Has it started?

I passed through a couple of days ago and it has not. But I asked the lounge dragon when it would start and he said it would begin in late January.

I'm next passing through AKL in mid-February so I'll see if that is indeed the case.

Am in the Strata Lounge.
Nzd$75 abit about $72 Aud.
QF AKL lounge doors swung open, there are people inside, non staff.
No sign of opening times from outside visible.
The below is mine, as I am flying AirNZ premY, no lounge access with that tix.
Strata is ok.
+++

OffT

The last time I was at AKL INTL was February 2017 and it seems like they had some renovations since then including the aforementioned Strata lounge. Will be interesting to see which lounge is the best when I fly out on the 15th (have access to EK, QF, Strata lounges). As an aside, I sure hope QF146 gets delayed by a couple hours! 😂

Thanks for the info. Was an alternative lounge proposed?

Thanks for the info. Was an alternative lounge proposed?

The press release last August said that 'building work will be staged to enable the lounge to operate during the redevelopment'. And when I asked earlier this week, the lounge dragon confirmed this.

I think the Strata is best, not crowded as their is a large turnaround of people.
Food maybe not great, plonk or grog available, no Moet or Vevue of course.
EK might have come down a notch re salmon/food as not a lot of flights go through, all now direct to DBX bypassing Aust.
Every one goes for the QF lounge, so it can be chockers.
Try all 3.
EK lounge not open all the time now.
Has a notice on a stand, but no time to see hours it opens.
Closed at 10.30am today.

Ok.
Time to walk to the AirNZ gate to fly to MEL.
Back in Aus later today.
EK lounge open 17.15 to 20.30.
Edit: ah ooo so AKL airport still has free wifi on the secure side.
QF146 has an earlier dep from AKL, no?

Small narrow (QF) body plane today at AKLi gate 1.
It might be the one they use on your day of flight as well.
Lucky if it gets swapped to a 330 or grin, 787.

Let me guess it's the 737 special that doesn't even have a divider separating Economy from BusinessFirst? Would it harm QF to invest $5 on a magnetic rod to separate the two cabins like Virgin does. At least then economy passengers are forced to limbo under the pole (and I've checked most don't succeed attempting that at altitude)

Oh I wish- they can “dump” me into the EK lounge any time. Not quite as great as it used to be, but still by miles the best lounge in AKL, hands down.

Now EK lounge only open 3 hours per day!
That 737 I saw turned out to be QF144 not QF146.
Not sure if QF is doing their 330 AKL - SYD/vv these days.

I would say AKL QFi lounge depends on what the airport will approve, or do.Have to close and gut and rebuild if it's going to be like the photo.
This is T1 MEL QFd.
Ie, wide big airy, and view to outside.

Well why should EK open their lounge outside of a period before their own metal flight leaves? yes it's a lovely lounge but no reason to have it open at other times.

I'm actually curious if you found ANY value in paying the 70odd bucks for the Strata lounge when you don't really drink much alcohol (apart from cider iirc) and you say the food was ordinary. Did you use any shower facilities or anything else?

Personally, even as a "grog drinker" (but not heavy ! lol) in paying such an amount for a lounge. Maybe if it was a F lounge with a 5 hour layover in say DXB (not DBX) or something. Sounds like the Strata lounge is a bit of a rip off at that price point. I'd probably expect more a $30 tag or something for that.

I wonder if you could have even bundled on lounge access to your NZ W fare - it probably would have been cheaper?!

I quite like the DBX!

You mean DXB?
Any where where they have bitter like this is ok with me.
QF T1 MEL J lounge.

Because EK has a number of trans-tasman flights departing AKL to major international destinations like SYD, MEL, BNE, etc. Sure the bird has a red kangaroo on its tail but it doesn't change the fact it's still an EK flight!

I have paid that much to use whatever the predecessor to the Strata lounge was in 2017 (I think it was Dragon lounge or something). I found it was worthwhile having a 4 PM departure out of AKL on the 'hound back to SFO having had an early morning flight into AKL from ZQN. Having a shower, a bite to eat and some liquor before what would be roughly 24 hours of flying at the back of the bus was beneficial. Fortunately, I met a colleague at SFO who guested me into the United Club where I saw Kevin O'Leary (of Shark Tank fame) yelling into his phone. How wonderful! 🙄

It clearly depends on a number of factors. For instance, if you have the Amex Platinum or a card that has lounge access built in, why would you even care how much it costs since you'll get in free? Even if you must pay to get in it really depends on how long you'll be using the lounge for, what facilities you'll use, etc. Certainly if I had a 5 or 6 hour layover (or more) spending $70 to sit in an uncrowded lounge versus sitting out in the concourse struggling to find a power outlet and table can be beneficial.

In terms of cost, I would sincerely encourage you to look at the prices for third party lounges out there. Most lounges these days at airports will set you back $30 USD easily (and that's typically for smaller airports too) with most not having showers either! Take a look at SIN, LAX, CDG to name but a few. 70 Kiwi dollars works out to $44 USD which isn't too far from what you see elsewhere.

I believe on those travelling as a Star Gold elite or in Business class on Air New Zealand (or a partner airline) would have access to the lounge. At least this NZ webpage says as much.
