Almost 2,500 Qantas jobs could be sent overseas in a decision to be made by the airline in the next two weeks, chief executive Geoff Dixon said.

Qantas is considering sending the company's entire heavy maintenance work overseas.

Mr Dixon said there were 6,900 employers in Qantas' engineering division, of which 2,500 are under consideration.

"At the moment we are looking to restructure the total (heavy maintenance) area because we are around about 15 to 20 per cent below world's best practice," he told ABC radio.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out, given that Warren Truss hinted that he felt the decision to block SQ might help QF to keep jobs in Australia.

Top management seems to be determined to send "heavy maintenance" overseas. And with Air NZ's announcement recently of 500 job cuts in "heavy maintenance" I don't think there is a coincidence there.
