With the Dreamliner you cant control the window shades so the FAs decide whether you are aware if it is light or dark outside, so even if a daylight flight, no guarantee you will see any of it unless on an A380.

If you are someone who likes to look out the window this option is largely denied on the Dreamliner.

Which I love because you get NIMBYs sitting in the window seat who keep their one shade open (only one in the cabin) when everyone is trying to sleep because they want to see the indian ocean from 40,000 ft.

If you are looking at the Indian Ocean on a LAX-BNE sector then the window shade is the least of your problems.

The LAX-BNE flight is an A330 anyway, so the window shades aren't automatic.

Not all crews control the windows on the 787. I do agree though it is annoying.

I would say this the last one I was on, while only a MEL-SYD hop at lunchtime, the crew only half dimmed the windows during fliht, and it actually was quite pleasant imo. Not too much glare but not too dark so people couldn't look out. A nice balance.

Don't get me wrong, I do feel pax should have the choice for what works for them (as long as they're not the only window opener in the dark cabin village - though I guess that is what eye masks are for).

Anyway I would have no real issue in the A330 for transpac (in J) given the suite is more or less the same as that on the 787 and (reconfig) A380 so that experience is not so bad. The limited loos though, that could definitely be an issue... in Y, the 2 side seats can work better. There's no PE on those birds though, so that is an issue.

My daytime flight LAX>BNE (and return) has been cancelled for trips in both November 2022 and June 2023. Sadly, they seem to be returning to night flights on this route.

They were changed a few weeks back. I now have a full extra day in LA in November.

my experience has been that window shutters are closed on virtually all long haul flights so its always night time 😄
