Article: Qantas & Virgin End Fee-Free Changes, Credits

The question is why? If I understand correctly just about all the major US carriers have permanently dropped change fees?

Why the need for aussie airlines to revert?

‘that’s the way it’s always been’ isn’t really a good reason.
I agree with you as well as the need to move on.

Clearly the US airlines are finding a way to make this work, wonder if it is that Qantas can't or just doesn't want to try.

I said in another thread a while back, if Flex fares are priced at a reasonable premium to saver/red E deal (i.e. not 3x) then this would be more palatable. Also the VA approach of allowing fee free changes up to 14 days before travel on choice fares is a sort of middle ground (along with, as I said, typically much more reasonable flexible economy fares)

Obviously they’re banking on the misery of someone having to cancel and the airline gets to keep the money, for free (provide no service in return).

Back in the days of manual and paper ticketing maybe there was justification in a ‘$’ charge for the work involved, but that’s not the case in 2022.

In the US there is serious competition among the airlines, they are not going to implement it unless the competitors do.

For VA and QF the comfortable duopoly allows them to do this.

Seems like the more practical idea might be simply to book the fly flexible fares, cancel them or change them to a Red-E deal closer to the day of departure ? (Well for those who can afford to tie up the cash)

QF have the "equal or higher fare" rule that prevents this

Or choose *shock horror* a Jetstar fare with the Plus bundle. Which often isn’t any more expensive or even cheaper than a red e-deal anyway but comes with no change fee (of course fare difference still applies) as opposed to the $99 change fee on a red e-deal.

And perhaps we are now getting toward the convenient truth for Qantas executive

Understandable but should only apply to new bookings. I have made some bookings where there is a reasonable chance that I will need to change dates. I did this knowing I could change for free. It is not good to change conditions on a booking after it is made.
Same for me QFFF and res advised they had not been advised. Refered them to AFF . I booked to Japan but do not know if able to travel re Covid. I also beleive rules applicable when booked should apply. QF make the rules as they feel fit.

I think you will find that bookings made under the conditions prior to change would be possible
I am sorry but can somebody help re rules regarding classic reward bookings. As QF have cancelled 3 flights.to Japan. I wish to book some domestic flights. Tried to check with QF but they were unaware. Up to when can I book and if have to change is there a cut off date for free
I am not the best using this site and rather get abused on other sites. Would appreciate how to start a new question here.
Thanks

When I made a reward booking recently the rules about cancellations/changes etc was prominently displayed during the process. From memory I think it was flexible cancellations/changed for domestic bookings/travel prior to 30 Sep. International was end of the year for bookings by 30 Sep.

Google flexible flight qantas etc but but you could commence a booking too.
