Article: Single-Aisle Planes Are the Future of Qantas' Fleet

Given that QF (not Jetstar) currently offer lie flat beds in J on all LH and ULH routes, and that proposed newer aircraft also offer this, I see no basis for the claim that long flights will have recline only.

Any domestic or trans Tasman or Fiji flight is not a long one; and if you expecting to lie flat for a 3-5 hour flights you would be left wanting on most carriers (especially in EU).

That bar was set by SQ and other airlines?
Not in the Domestic Australian market, no. I actually think that QF’s decision to go with Airbus instead will be seen as a wise one for years and years to come.

I agree about ULH but I can actually see the day when QF ceases to offer flat beds on Transcon flights or even some Asian routes unfortunately

Transcon is only 5 hours, i don't consider that a long flight; and very few of the aircraft flying it offer it now (mostly just QF9/10 which is really a ULH as it continues to or has come from LHR, or the FCO flights).

Also dont see why they would remove from SIN flights as the MEL/BNE - SIN are designed to connect with QF1/2. Tokyo is 10 hours again don't see recline only being offered for that route in J either. HKG is overnight on return and at 9sih hours also likely to keep beds.

Maybe they will cut them out on Bali flights but that isnt really a route that attracts business travellers, it mostly budget holiday makers, which is why most flights are actually Jetstar.

It feels a very long time since QF operated 767s. I used to try avoiding 737s like the plague especially within the golden triangle but now I have no choice. A shame twin-aisles are almost impossible to fly domestically and even sometimes to NZ.

This article, especially the headline, is quite off. You can't take current aircraft orders and assume that is the end of it.

As recent as Aug 2022, QF asked Airbus to make an A330 replacement. Qantas Wants Planemakers To Propose An Airbus A330 Replacement. It has previously, recently (2018) expressed interest in Boeing's 797.

The A350s are just the initial order - QF has said several times the A350 is a likely replacement to the A380, not just on sunrise routes.

I love the A380 hope they dont disappear too soon.

Whilst Y and W may be left with a single aisle, id expect J to still have 2 aisles to support 1 2 1 layout rather than an awful 2 2.

But suggesting that Qantas will phase out lie flat seats on their mid range routes is neither factual nor backed by any of their statements or publicly available plans.
That's perfectly true, but as no one here has suggested that, I wonder at the relevance.

Neither do I, but again, no-one here has claimed that  Can you quote the actual 'claim' you are referring to?

As far as I can tell, this is the comment that comes closest to the above:

Unfortunately, in the future we'll be offered a long flight in business with recliners only.

Spot the difference? :)

Only F will be lie flat?

It will only be a single flight that has recliners only - so refuse the offer and wait for the lie flat offer?

Flights will be supersonic so no longer considered long?

🤷‍♂️

Oh absolutely regarding SIN but it wouldn’t surprise me if places like CGK, MNL and BKK for example eventually are looked at. Who knows what the future holds

On the flip side there's been a few airlines that have operated lie flat seats on narrowbodies - BA, AA, JetBlue. CGK and MNL perhaps for a premium config narrowbody, but BKK is too far (not much closer than HNL).

Keeping in mind J & Freight fund the flight, they won't be downsizing as hastily as you suggest.

Cute. The fact that a statement Unfortunately, in the future we'll be offered a long flight in business with recliners only. (which I thought would be uncontentious, being the bleeding obvious) can raise such reactions amongst a few here indicates quite the over-defensiveness I think. :) I'll back out now, pending verification of "the claim that long flights will have recline only" . 👋

Oh I’m just spitballing and all just a bit of fun.
I’m in the airfreight game so know how crucial it is to QF especially

I'm literally confused about what you're trying to claim. Are you saying they'll have lie flat or not?

I mean they can try if they'd like and absolutely destroy themselves doing it. It's not like there's no competition flying medium haul to Asia and there's no way any of the mainline Asian carriers will downgrade themselves that way outside of small point to point routes. (Even then carriers like SQ fits in lie flats on their narrow body).

Some flights to New Zealand will have to be widebody Emirates had been flying A380s there for a few years and in some cases example BNE-AKL the A330 is needed

Jetstar can add a few extra seats but then you might have 1 jetstar following 1 Qantas flight.
