Article: Why The Journey Is As Important As The Destination

Now I’ve reached the stage of (semi) retirement with plenty of time and enough money, I’m really enjoying slower travel. Our last trip to see Seat Son (TR coming soon) involved a 3 night stay in Bangkok, 3 nights in Singapore, 16 days in Spain and Portugal and a week in Sri Lanka. So we have really been enjoying the journey.

Look forward to your TR @Seat0B , bet those hugs were 💓

It was so lovely to spend nearly a month with him! I’d planned to do the TR on return but was duck with something - not COVID- and lost 10 days and now I’m in Japan. I don’t know how people do the TRs on the go. I just cannot manage it.
And I’m feeling so very grateful to have time and money and particularly my health to do all this travel. I’m taking every chance I can while the remission lasts.

I can't even manage to finish some of my TR let alone do them on the go and I'm just about to head off again.

Enjoy your travels while you can - that is my motto - although there is one other AFFer who keeps pushing me to do more - you know who you are ;)

I'm a plane nerd so don't mind a couple of pit stops to experience new routes/airlines and airports when not in a hurry.

2 years ago, while on holiday in Europe, I travelled by train from Salzburg to Berlin,
It took all day, around 7 hours with a train change in Munich.

I could have flown between the 2 airports in 1 hour 5 minutes but it was absolutely fascinating to sit back and watch the changing landscapes of Austria and Germany roll by ( with a couple of cheeky red wines in hand )

I'm a journey type of person. I love the planning, research and booking. I dislike the packing and last minute home finalising, stressful!

I love the airport, people watching, lounges, flights everything. I love different types of travel, planes, trains etc. But I am a get to the airport, station, meeting place, early type of person, to cover the unexpected.

My DH hates all of the above, queueing, waiting, people in crowds. He does like the journey once on board, especially if in business class. And whinges about the jetlag.

When planning my next trip, I always ask him if he has another trip in him, without too much complaining. And we do love the slow travel experience, now that we are retired.

I guess after this thread being active for a week or so now, it occurs to me … are there THAT many people who don’t go for the journey as being kinda important? I mean, how many of us down here at the cough end of the world go to somewhere in the USA or Europe and just stay in one place … because surely most people travel around, and THAT is the journey! :)

I guess I’m saying that the true suffering that is long-haul Y travel isn’t the grand-total of “the journey”. :)
