Hi,
I would love any feedback from anyone who has managed to book an award flight in January from Hong Kong.

I am trying to get HKG-PER from between the 3rd-7th of January. I have checked Asia Miles daily since January this year and nothing.

Nothing is available HKG to any of The Australian cities in Jan.

I am thinking of buying Premium Economy and then applying for an upgrade.

Traveling with a 4yr old so wishing to fly direct rather than multiple stops

Appreciate any info
Sam

Cathay has blocked HKG - Australia/NZ route for all of reward seats in all cabin from Jan 2025 to late Feb 2025. I was only able to get PE from HKG-CHC-SYD when Cathay announced seasonal flight, but even that route has shown nil availability now.

Do you think they will unblock closer to Jan.
Asia miles website says that “they do not block out award availability”

I am hoping that in late October or November they release seats but maybe that wishful thinking

Worth keeping in mind that Jan to early Feb is peak travel season between Australia & HK with Christmas, Chinese New Year & start of the school year. That diminishes the likelihood of award seats opening up.

When I say "block", it more means that Cathay is not releasing any rewards seats during that period, and as per Levelnine mentioned, Jan is usually peak season for inbound flights to Australia, and Feb is Chinese NY. If you do a search from 18th of Feb onwards inbound flights, you will find lots of availability in Y, although no J.

I don't think Cathay will release any seats in the next 2 months, your best shot might be 1 week before your departure, that will be the last releasing batch from Cathay, and if you still can't find any, then that means Cathay has got 100% load on all flights.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
