Asked to leave pe seat, and move to economy

Anyone traveling on private travel with staff or industry discounts would be first to be downgraded.

Correction: SHOULD be first to be down graded.

Several times before I quit using Q regularly they tried down grading or putting me off the flight at the gate. I normally head to the gate before the Q Club call is done so I have no trouble with the overhead locker space.

Each time they tried it on I had seen Q staff (either in uniform or chatting with on-duty staff at the gate board first before the attempts to downgrade or push to a later flight.

Each time I ended up demanding to see the Q duty manager to complain, and each time ended getting on the flight. A couple of the times some very angry looking Q staff were off loaded (how embarrassing for them :)) but on other occasions they were still on the flight so I suspect other passengers got bumped instead.

Well as JB has mentioned once or twice before, if QF need to have a certain staff member at a certain airport at a certain time, you can bet your bottom dollar that will happen, even if it means bumping off paying pax to transport that QF staff member.

I strongly suspect that QF figure if it's a choice of 1 pax being delayed or a whole plane load of pax been delayed, it's not really a choice.

....In this instance, it would appear that the fare adjustment would be either $630 or $385 depending on your fare class.

You may be able to argue for more though!
Argue?

If the return premium economy airfare was $4,000 and the return economy airfare at the time was ~$888 then the difference for one-way downgrade is at least $1,500.

In that type of situation I would expect a refund of at least $1,556 plus compensation for the inconvenience. The airline can't have it both ways and they know it. I feel sorry for the people who accept anything less....

agreed. And I don't think they have any legal consequence whatsoever. QF fantasy land.

I suspect not, which is why I said it was a starting point. I think they do it for administrative simplicity, and what they offer. I suspect you'd need to take it up with them to get more! The issue with a PE to Y downgrade is which price point you set the downgraded price point at. Qantas seem to pick relatively high end (read flexible) fare levels to downgrade you to.

They would lose my business for an indefinite period. Years at least. End of story. Plenty of options out there, especially if you are based in Melbourne.

They'd want to be offering something that looks an awful lot like a full refund plus compensation if they ever wanted me to set foot in one of their planes again.

Out of interest, would any airline ever offer a full refund for a downgrade?

Seriously why not put laws in place so they can never try this sort of deceptive garbage?

And if you are worried about profit I know some executive bonuses that could be scrapped to achieve the same result....

Exactly! Either of the two major parties offering an EU compensation scheme (why not just copy it?? how simple could that be?) would get good political mileage and votes. We've all seen Airways... yes I know it is all in the editing... but a cancelled flight and the next flight offered could be a day away (or more?). An EU scheme would guarantee those people would fly same day on another carrier.

Sorry can I get clarification on the title of this thread? Was the customer "asked" to move to economy, ie. given an option that they could refuse or take the option and accept the compensation?

Or were the "told" to move to economy and said they would be given the X compensation?

Surely that completely changes whether it is reasonable or not.

I wasn't asked to move, a comment was made to me about being lucky, as the flight was oversold in premium and they were asking passengers to move back to economy. ( I had a confirmed points upgrade from pe to business , which when I think about it, may have been given a free upgrade since they were obviously trying to creat some seats there.) business class was full also, so an upgrade may have been the case for some lucky passengers.) I was flying with a friend who had an economy seat, and when asked about the seating in economy, she was told that exit row seats were being blocked for the passengers who were being asked to move back. ( I think she said 4 oversold )

I don't doubt that staff on leisure travel should be bumped before revenue pax but I'm not sure how you could know if staff were on Duty Travel or not.

There's no way they'd bump staff about to start work in other ports and cause knock-on delays across the network (nor should they have to).

Yeah but we're those passengers going to be asked or told?

My point is that if Qantas are only asking then I dont think the compensation is necessarily unfair because you can take it or leave it or potentially bargain for something better if you want. If you are made to move back and have no choice but to accept their compensation I would argue it is inadequate.

I don't know, if your flying J, and your downgraded to Y, but then given a voucher to travel in F on your next long haul flight, I think you might be happy with that...

It would want to be a confirmed upgrade to F because if it was on a space available basis there's nil guarantee you'd get it.

Although with Airways a lot of the time the people who have stuffed up for whatever reason eg arriving too late to checkin for a flight are encouraged by the program's crew to put on a show so they can film it. I heard of one instance where a even after declining to make a scene, the crew even offered to pay for a new ticket on the proviso she'd make a scene. Once again she declined Airways' offer.
