ATO Payment via Credit Card

Slightly OT but I thought this would be a good place to post this-

Am I the only business owner that sells things to himself only to return the item for a refund?

No. But many that do, do get it in trouble with the CC supplier if caught.

If we genuinely buy something through work I do pay for it on a card that earns points. I would never do a bogey contra just to get points at our low fee transaction rate because the Banks are watching and it breaches several rules.
We have a product that removes drain smells for at least 6 months so we use that in our apartments so that is a handy product we buy. Real product/ real transaction should be the test of a transaction.
An example of a transaction that would fail would be a contra where say $10,000 gets credit card processed as a transaction and then the money gets paid back to the credit card.

I read a post some time ago, where a Merchant got caught doing something like this using Amex card. Amex not only cancelled his card but also cancelled the Merchant Agreement.

You might get one warning when the phoney transaction is discovered if you are lucky and that could depend on your value to your bank.
It was a dentist I know who had to reverse the 10k transaction pretty much the same day and he was shaken by the phone call. Yes Big Brother is watching you.

That puts an end to that little earner then, not that it earned much as I just thought of it this month. Thanks for the heads up.

To other members out there please don't ring Westpac, of course they're going to say that officially. Just ride the train and take the points while they are still there.

I do about $5k a month earning me ~7500 points. When I return the item I process the refund into my debit card. A great way to earn about 100K points a year and no surcharge! The merchant fee is worth the points earn.

My business has a 7 day no questions asked refund policy for "Platinum" members of which there is only one - me!

how does this work??? you as a shop owner would get charged the merchant fee of 1.5% or whatever it is wouldnt you????

and since you are refunding onto a debit card, wouldnt you just get a refund of 10c per transaction or nothing or whatever your merchant rate for debit cards are????

Four super funds: Host Plus, First State Super, Australian Super and HESTA Hope this helps.
Is this still the case? Checking the BPay website, all of these funds are only listed as accepting debit cards, not credit cards.

Sorry just read this. I think you are talking about me...I think. Anyway I now do this with AMEX's blessing, no nasty phone calls from the Amex fraud division and no suspended card and merchant accounts

I have a westpac krisflyer amex cc. I would like to pay my tax via bpay online. But when i try to do that via bank website, it only allows making payment from visa card and not amex. Any options to use amex cc via bpay please?

thanks in advance

Just go Amex on Government Easy Pay ATO site with the Westpac Kris Flyer Platinum card.

Just paid a small tax bill on Woolies card and waiting for monthly statement but I can see that for $13,000 spend I've accrued 13,800 points so the ATO points are working for the moment.
