ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

That's 1.5 Amex rewards you mean is it, which translates to qantas points of 1.15 per $?

No, with Earth Black Amex you get a true 1.5 Qantas pts per $, or with Altitude Black Amex (and some others) you earn 3 reward points per $, which translates to 1.5 FF points with a range of other FF programs (eg Virgin, Singapore, Malaysia).

Well, that info is wrong according to my Nab and Westpac cards. Suspect he doesn't really know. I'm surprised at the big companies who don't pay and who pay tens of thousands of tax each month.

PLEASE don't ask them. PLEASE don't draw attention to this practice. PLEASE read all the threads here...where you will find several reports of success with such cards. Sorry to be so blunt but...

No probs, wouldn't have asked the question to the bank if I came by this thread first. After the bank took more than a day to reply and I needed to make the payment I started googling and came across the thread, wish I had done it the other way around.

No worries...enjoy :) It's a beautiful thing. There are many things that the help desks don't know and don't need to know ;)

Before I asked on here about receiving CBA diamond reward points for ATO payments, I asked the CBA via netbank email and 4 days later have finally received this response -

the only way to make a payment to the ATO via your credit card is via the ATO website. All payments on your credit card to the ATO are treated as a cash equivalent transaction. This means that the amount doesn't earn Commonwealth Awards and the you will be charged a cash advance fee of 1.75% of the amount plus there is no interest free period on cash equivalent transactions.

Please tell me he is wrong because I have made payment already?

They are referring to paying via the ATO website using BPAY.

Just finished the personal tax payments on Amex Ultimate so we are now pretty fully loaded with Qantas FF points. I did pick up 30k points on WOW MasterCard but that is a bit of a side show. With Citi biting the dust and our BankWest capped out until August it was pretty much Ultimate for a few weeks. I did give Westpac Kris Amex a shake to help Mrscove's numbers with SQ.

Between PAYG instalments, BAS and company tax (at least - there's also PRT, LCT, land tax, other state duties, etc, for some), tens of thousands of dollars of tax a month is a small business, not a big one!

It was simply a matter to say tens rather than hundreds of thousands...but am now saying that. I'd hoped to get away with less typing on my phone ;)

Slightly off topic but those in NSW having to pay the dastardly payroll tax, the state governments Payroll Tax Rebate Scheme (Jobs Action Plan) applications for newly created jobs ends on 30 June 2013. I hadn't applied for at least 12 months so was certain the 40,000 positions available would have been filled. Surprised last Friday that still 16,000 positions available.
Getting back $4K per position over two years or $28K in my situation is nice as still getting the FF points at less than ATO rates.

Hi guys. thanks for sharing all the tricks on using CC with ATO payments, realising how much points i have missed out in the past few years....and cramming myself in AirAsia and Tiger for business travel to save a few bucks...

I have just got myself a Select and put through my first ATO payment of 60K PAYG in May....and to realise that the $400 CC fees have gone wasted...

Thinking of getting the Altitude Black, but can someone tell me if 60K payment would go through on the black each month?

I fly with SQ so I would need to transfer to KF...

Has anyone received points with SELECT or Altitude Black for:

1. ATO GST payment?
2. WA State Payroll Tax?
3. Employee superannuation payment? We use AMP as a default fund and it accept VISA with a fee... but I've never tried..

Oops!!! Yes, Citi Select much less useful than it was a few months ago.

Altitude Black still relatively new, not sure if too many people have been hammering it to the tune of $60k per month at the ATO, but I haven't heard of any instances of points denied. I'd probably work up to it with a series of smaller payments but I'm sure a lot of people here will be very keen to see how you go if you want to do it in one shot...

Yes for 1 plus points for the fees.
The other two aren't relevant for me.

I put >$120k on my Altitude black this month, and points posted with no questions asked. Agree this doesn't necessarily establish that you could do this every month without problems, but I'd say it's a good sign.

In any case, people were happily hammering Select every month for some time before Citi suddenly pulled the plug, so I think it's fair to say "past performance is no guarantee of future results"!

Most would not now go Visa to get big numbers of points on ATO. They would tend to go the Amex 1.5 points per dollar seeing Citi and ATO are extinct.

Per my calcs points are cheaper thru WBC Black MC at 0.625 pts per $1 with 0.48% cost rather than Black Amex at 1.5 pts per $1 at a cost of 1.45%.

Or are you referring to some other card, or is my maths wrong?

Thanks Jack 3193,

Did you put the 120k through in one go? I just applied the Altitude Black online and got an instant approval for 25k, do I just top it up with credit payment first?

I have about 60k PAYG payment to make each month...plus heaps of GST payment to make this year..

hopefully that goes through so I can finally take the whole family to US in biz class for the first time, after nearly bankcrupting myself a few years ago when I first got into business..
