ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Hopefully master cove doesn't mind me briefly answering on his behalf here. He sends points to a variety of programs - he just happened to have mentioned Velocity recently in the thread - and uses them to "buy" (not upgrade - at least not typically) flights.
I think you meant to say "The Master"........

I have always known that upgrading a bought ticket can be a really good way of getting into a PE , J or First seat so don't overlook these opportunities.
It's just that I go working all the points opportunities so I can jump over that step.
After three straight days of work I took a lunch break with Mrscove and she was surprised when I used a Black Altitude Amex to pay for a slew of discounted gift cards from one of our bigger retailers. She seemed to be impressed when I told her it would be a half way ride from Singapore to London in First for a few minutes effort (or maybe Los Angeles).
It's only a fortnight until more taxes fall due so I have cleared some credit cards.
Remember it is a game.

Amex $100 x 1.45% = $1.45 for 300 CBA pts = 150 QFF points or 0.96c per point

MCard $100 x 0.42% = $0.42 for 100 CBA pts = 50 QFF points or 0.84c per point

The general rule seems to be, if you need the points, pay with Amex, if you like the points, but don't want to spend a lot pay with Amex.

I am with WBC Altitude Black so I get 1.25 WBC points per $ on MC and 3 WBC points per $ on Amex, so MC is a much better deal.

WBC MC 0.673c/FF pt v Amex 0.966c/FF pt - Amex points cost 45% more than MC ones, but, of course, you get more points.

If I had, say, $100k tax to pay and I have lots of points, I would prefer to pay CC fees of $420 rather than $1,450 of cash now and would receive 125k WBC points, worth 62.5k KrisFlyer points I may use sometime in the future. Amex would get me 150k points for $1,450.

If you need the points to get enough to redeem a flight, and they cost you 0.966c / point with Amex and you can then redeem them for a business class seat for 3-4c per point then you are still ahead.

Hope this helps.

Angus

Thanks - have fee-free diamond so that's fine (not covering your quote but subsequent comments re: fee free options).

Not in desperation for points currently so will go with value - so MC it is.

got a letter from ATO on friday, saying my BAS for 1st Q was incorrect and we owe them an extra 34K. bummer really. i decided not to spoil my weekend by investigating why, but will do so tomorrow. if it's true it will be the first time ever that i've stuffed it up since the BAS started. i just hope that they are wrong really. am happy to pay it on the CC, but if they are wrong, and they have to re-imburse me, they will send a cheque. i am hoping for that scenario really

Is it estimated tax for next FY? If the figures don't look that good you can amend. The ATO can't really check on GST stuff unless you've really messed up the figured.

no i don't think so, they've said my BAS was wrong, and have sent me a copy of the worksheet, and a copy of what it should look like. i'll worry about it tomorrow. opened the mail while at the hairdressers trying to relax for the first time in months, and then had a wedding to go to yesterday, so have decided that today was a slow day. Domani, domani

The ATO called me at work this past week but they couldn't talk to me because I failed the identity questions seeing I keep the tax files at home.
I think I messed up at about question 13.....

I hate it when that happens. It's like "they know". Good luck.

I hate that too. They have rung you for Pete's sake.

Domani -> oggi..... good luck sorting out your BAS. Exactly what I will be doing today too.

it seems i just made an error when filling in the original BAS form. i have paid the correct amount anyway. but i might just have a little go and pay what they say anyway, and then they'll re-imburse me when it comes around in the wash.....this is going to be fun 103,191 points at a cost of $498.76 which is a tax deduction being a business expense anyway.

I had been hoping for a thank you card from the ATO but it now looks most unlikely seeing they wouldn't even talk to me last week (because I failed my own ID questions/answers).
Well at least I think I know who I am but 20 years from now that could be a bit doubtful....

Well Joe has promised us all a thank you card from the ATO with a breakdown of where our taxes went.

That should be interesting and probably rather depressing

I have a week left to complete this months taxes and I have made some good progress but I will have to reload the selected cards before the deadline of 21st November. I miss using Citibank and American Express Ultimate as the combined $338,000 of their limits going down the tubes makes ATO payment time more of a chore.
I have found some uses for those 5 cards so all is not lost. Those cards live on and have not been cut into many pieces using my titanium bladed 3M scissors.

Cove you know any paypass cards that are looking at binning\cutting can be used as NFC tags!
Tap tap!

Technology can become a problem or a saviour.
The ATO probably needed me to be chipped to identify me so that we could talk the other day.
A couple of days later I passed their ID test so I am more connected to the ATO.
