ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Re: Amex: Turn your recurring bills into ongoing rewards..1K bonus points per partner

With MEL,BNE and CBR being such short flights it would only hurt if you regularly fly to PER.
The VA points plus pay could be an option to explore J travel cheaply in Australia. Markis10 has that really sussed.
F1 seems to have your attention if you are doing 4 of them.
Taxes building a better F1 experience or 4 !

Don't really do enough domestic travel.
Mr KLN threatening to retire today anyway, so maybe have to look at Domestic J after all, may have to do some V8 trips now. Now just have to work out how to keep our business going without us so we can keep earning the points. next problem!

KLN you are no orphan in this retirement gig. We took in partners.
i have become so conditioned to making and burning points that it would put a big dent in our travel plans if it ever stopped.
When I was 60 I decided that the next 10 years needed to be big travel years.......enter js with this thread and dreams came true.
Finished the Monthly BAS by the 21st and the had the quarterly bills finished this morning and no calls from any of the credit card companies to see that it was me doing the payments.

I have been so lucky this quarter as the ATO computer didn't send 3 quarterly PAYG instalment notices so I can make a thousand or two in interest by the deferral of those payments. Now that is a first for me.
I had been miffed as I was thinking about points....... Years ago I would have been really excited to get a tax holiday.
Yes Angus when you are constantly loading credit cards the fraud/audit section of the credit card company can give you a call. Just tell them how much you still have to go and they will key the information into your file.

I've never had them ring me for these transactions. Plenty of others though, which i'm grateful for. it's better than fraud. if ever i'm doing large transaction, which i do, i always ring them and let them know. same about going overseas, i always let them know, but never for the ATO. monthly and quarterly payments all finalised last week, with CC pre-loaded, ready and waiting. now for next month, for the yearly taxes (including Mother-out-Law who's just grateful i do all of her banking, via internet and MY CC for her). Bring it on!

Does anyone know if ATO gets cross if you make the payment 1 day late.

I was thinking of making 28 Feb Payments on 29 Feb to make sure it falls in new statement. From date of paying it normally takes 1 to 2 days before it will appear on statement - ie if I make a payment 28 Feb it will show up as paid 29 Feb. If I pay 29 Feb it will show on statEMENT as 1 March.

Any thoughts - is 1, 2 or even 7 days late OK?

i once did it 3 days late. the only time ever since the start of GST, and i got a letter saying i was a very naughty girl basically.

You should be OK - I have been a few days late a couple of times since they brought quarterly payments in with no problem - I think that they have (or had) a grace period or a couple of days.

But when I was late a few times in a row I got warning letters and then finally a fine, so they will lose patience, eventually, but I still think a day or two should not usually be an issue - unless they have launched a crack down or something recently.

Caveat emptor!

We had a presentation from an ATO officer one day whom explained the general approach of the ATO. 'Willing compliers' generally get letters, nasty letters, GIC (general interest charge) and remissions.

As people move themselves up the ladder of creativity and start being creative with their dealings with the ATO, then the ATO starts to apply more resources.

At the top is the outright tax evaders whom get maximum resources.

In my experience as a willing complier then 1-7 days doesn't cause them any concerns apart from sending me a letter every 3-4th time.

If you pay after 6pm on the due date, you should get an extra day with your credit card company, and still be on-time with the ATO...

The important thing is to lodge the BAS on time as you risk a $110 late lodgment penalty for every month it is late although the first time you do it you generally get a warning letter. As for the payMent the ATO computer will automatically levy interest. ( even for one day late) but if the interest amount is small ie under $50 or so the ATO computer seems to automatically remit it. You will see this if you have access to the business or tax agent portal.

And of course thanks for keeping Australia from sinking.

Just planning my tax affairs, not sure if I should re-raise the CC fee deductibility question again. But the website says CC fees on payment of income tax is deductible provided the money is not borrowed. So I just put my card into a positive balance?

Any opinions about Capital gains tax being "income tax" or otherwise? (yes I am asking for an opinion not advice)

Have been following this thread for along long time. She who holds the purse strings, finally relented and let me pay today with credit card...The accountant said he couldn't find it on the ATO website, so I think she thought it was abit of a challenge. I believe the BA first class trip home from Europe (on points) convinced her of the value of points chasing...

My pleasure. I am turning into a socialist. This is very devious and planned I'm sure by the labor government
