ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I am trying to inspire AFF members to enjoy paying taxes wafliron.
It is way more fun up the front of the plane.
It is SQ Suites today for my sister in law and my niece. I couldn't get them home on SQ from Singapore so they are switching to QF J to get back home.
Now that is an advantage of more than one loyalty program.

Cove you might need to start wearing lead soon with that many long hauls!!!

I think I am heavy enough without a lead lining. Hopefully some of the cosmic rays have vitamin D in them rather than the glow in the dark stuff. Flight crews don't glow in the dark so I should be ok.
We are now a week away from heading to the US and I have 3 tax accounts left to wrap up. I have been missing the easy way out using Amex to pay taxes this month as that would be far quicker.
My colleagues all have their Citi Select accounts running well so Citi may be doing their back office stuff a lot better now.

I looked at Mrscove's most recent transactions on a credit card and saw there was one complete page of ATO payments and 0.48 % fees that took her to her limit then re-load. Have decided that was a bad look so she has started putting other stuff onto that card. Next month should look a lot better with a mixture of purchases.
Mrscove then managed to use just over 200,000 points more than she earned and I appreciated getting the Qantas email summary that pointed this out. I do think her addiction to domestic flight JASAs can be managed somehow.

Is BAS due next week?
Told I need to pay this by next week and cannot wait until Nov?
Things I do for 10K points ;)

EDIT: Just to confirm again COVE I can put the card CREDIT and still get the points?
ie. 9K Credit card--->10K Tax bill----->Put 1K into Credit card= 10K in points

So far no one has reported missing points.
You could pay in two goes and do a BPay re-load.
That means you pay a bit now and then pay that off then pay the rest if you want to be totally within the 10,000 rules of your credit card.
Your tax bill is probably due around 28th but you can see that on the bill as there are all sorts of dates for the various types of taxes.

I think the due date is 29th as 28th is a Sunday. On ours, anyway! :)

don't forget to ask your accountant/ tax agent about lodging online. you may get a 2 week extension (except for Dec BAS) to make your money work for even longer before handing it over in exchange for points.

*this is not financial advice blah blah blah*

Yes, I did this for the last BAS as we were overseas. From memory, three additional weeks or something?

Ermen I handed in my tax agent licence after almost 40 years so I cannot now give tax advice.
I do enjoy FBT being one of the taxes included in my tax payment run on credit cards.
This year we got three state payroll taxes onto cards and WA land tax has removed the $5,000 limit. Now that was very nice.

No wasn't asking for advice. Was just pointing out the ATO practice statement that credit card points earned whilst paying business expenses may be construed as assessable income or FBT and taxed accordingly. Not taxed on receipt of points but on redemption. 250K points p.a. and below the ATO normally doesn't care though it seems...

I think its really bad for them to be taking that position though - they just want to get their hands into everything!

The ATO need to be treated respectfully through each of our lives as they are entitled to take their share of your taxable income. Naturally every taxpayer is entitled to structure their affairs to minimize the incidence of taxes (and levies).
Qantas do stay within the 250,000 limit on points when you have a business arrangement with them due to that ruling I believe.
Whether it can be seen as a business is an interesting concept.
To our family it is just a game where you can be frugal and still enjoy travelling in the nicest seats and the best hotel rooms and as you get older you can still do it and not have to fly in a seat that might hurt your body or make you sick.
Game on I think.

Hi has anyone used a HSBC premier MasterCard to pay for ato tax and got points ? Or will I run into trouble and pay the extra transaction charge but get no points for it..... Please help.... Thanks!

Woolies EDRCC is run by HBSC and you get points with them so you would get points (up to the 300k cap) on the HSBC Premier card Ny770.

Yes the back room of Woolies Everydayrewards Credit Card and HSBC are the same people so both should pay QFF points on ATO payments.

Hi, I have just trawled through this website for a few hours, so sorry if this info is in there, but I have a WWEDRCC and am hoping to pay some big ATO bills on it. I can't put it into credit, it seems as if you can only pay off the balance? I s that what others experience?. Also, I read on the ATO that you can only claim the credit card transaction fee as a tax deduction if you don't borrow the money from your financial institution, ie put on a credit card. So it would seem that it is best to overload a credit card, then pay, so you can legitimately claim the transaction fee as a tax deduction. Is that right? So would it be better to get a card you can overload rather than the WWEDRCC?

[TD="class: ContentUL"]The CPF is deductible to the extent that:

  • you incurred it as a result of paying an income tax liability and you did not borrow money from your card provider to make the payment

      • paid out of your own funds - for example, using a debit card.

Woolies EDRCC have cancelled some cards that were only used for tax payments.
Citi Business,Signature and Select are all working OK for tax payments.
How large is "large" approximately? Are we talking 4 figures, 5 figures,6 figures or more??
