ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

The two certainties are death and taxes in one's life.
Better to earn and burn those points without flinching. There is a whole world out there just for you!
The quality of your points burning then becomes a very individual choice so enjoy your picks.
See you out there.

Cove, at your burn level and frequency I think you deserve the classification of pyromaniac ;)

There are two parts to this game that JS helped us to improve.
Earn the points well. ( If you are short of points you can buy US Air Dividend Miles on the promos)
Burn the points well.
Finding points redemption flights has been a lot of fun. I received a text from a friend wanting to know how I got First on QF to LAX for two. You have to look and it does not always need to be a FASA if there is a Classic redemption for 144,000 points on the A380.
Coming home we are using SQ and I really enjoy their 100 seater all business class non stop to Singapore.

I have just noticed ( probably later than most of you) that the ATO have finally put the credit card payment link on the "Payment Options" page on the "Business Portal". I do not receive any pink PAYG papers anymore so I cannot comment on the stationary. But it has only taken them 3 1/2 years to update the web stuff so pobably about 10+ for the paper version!!!
Anyway I was reading somewhere about the ATO mission statement and how it was their duty to offer tax payers as many payment options as possible. So it looks like cc is here to stay, just hope the cc companies keep up their end of the deal.
Looking forward to 2 europe J redemptions on SQ in early 2013 where as always the first bubbles toast will be to my ff business partners

Cheers Danger UXB

I believe this is stopping soon? yeah yeah off topic and should be in another thread

It doesn't appear on the paper BAS statements. It says Bpay, Direct credit from bank account, Direct Debit (and specifically says " not" credit card - their bold!), Mail and Post Office by Cheque.

Wanting to delete this thread now that current people have gained the information, reminds me of people who move to the Hills (in SA), build their homes with the view, then want to stop other people doing exactly the same as they did, in the name of "conservation"

After posting my point of view on this in an earlier post, I now believe cove has the right point of view, enjoy it while it lasts knowing you are ahead of the majority, this in mind I accept the information should remain here, will be disappointed if "enhancement" occurs, but move on to the next good thing...

My 2 cents worth...

The ATO reported that 280,000 business taxpayers were late to very late paying their taxes and 16.5 billion remains unpaid.
Let's face up to the facts......we are the good guys!

Hadn't noticed that but like you I can't see the ATO removing in a hurry. They may adjust the rates slightly though!

Quick question, can you pay a personal tax bill by CC?
Just paid one via the ATO portal using the details on the payment slip marked "we have no credit card facilities" and it appeared to go through ok, fingers crossed ;)

I have done this a few times already, and have not had any problem so far

Yes you can, have done & worked fine. That's just (very) old stationary, takes a long time for ATO to get things changed.

I've paid both income tax and BAS through the CC portal with no problems.

Yes, Princess, you can pay personal tax by CC.

But I was actually replying as I wanted to know if: "As long as you know men are like children , you know everything! " Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel

What do you think women are like? Are they really that different to men - don't we all have the inner child? Wanting shiny new JASA and FASAs in our Christmas stockings!

Sorry, whimsical Friday afternoon ruminations...

:-)

So now that you've had your chance to benefit from the info in this thread you want it removed to preserve your benefit, at the expense of anyone else who might read it and benefit from it in the future? Selfish much?

I haven't benefitted at all from this thread. No new information contained that I did not already know.

Reason why i am advocating for this to be deleted is due to the fact that there are many people running about on this thread advocating the use of CC's to pay business taxes for the purpose of earnings FF points. I have tried to hint subtly but let me point out something very clearly

As per this ATO practice statement and these few links:
Rewards received under consumer loyalty programs
PS LA 2004/4 (GA) - Income tax and fringe benefits tax - rewards received under consumer loyalty ... (As at 14 July 2004)
www.bdhco.com.au/files/docs/loyaltyprograms.pdf

Excessive points accrued via business expenses could i) be treated as business income or ii) subject to FBT.
So, in the case of someone redeeming 1m FF points a year (say) and redeeming for 8 x J return tickets SYD-SIN. Nominal value of the flight is say A$5K = $40K in yearly additional income to be taxed (technically, the calculation should be 70% of the full published fare of the J ticket).

Doesn't apply if you are paying personal tax or HECs though...

So, has anybody thought through these implications? Could this thread possibly cause the ATO to clamp down on this and / or the credit card companies to stop awarding points for ATO payments? Probably not, but who knows.

I think the ATO are more concerned with just getting the money in, not what people derive from paying their taxes on time...

I don't see how your post is going to improve the situation, by highlighting the situation...

Fortunately I don't currently earn more than 250,000 points from business expenses so no issues for me, and if or when I did or do then my wife would earn the next 250,000 points.

I also note that the ruling is from 2004 and the article is from 2006 and no action yet, which is not to say they they won't, but I think that they have bigger fish to fry with the volume and value of ovedue tax payments someone referred to in an earlier post than worry about a few of us frequent flier loonies.

But thanks for posting, feel free to delete your own post - as you are advocating for this whole thread to be deleted, perhaps you could lead by example? it would be a good start...

Welcome to ATO points PF, good to see you have made the smart payment option for your tax payments, hopefully you took advantage and used a Master Card / Visa Card for the discounted fee of 0.48% compared with Amex...

Loving the cheap J upgrades and JASA's this thread is providing :-)

Well it's a chicken and egg problem isin't it.
But yes it is a good idea that I delete my posts.

Any Mods, would it be possible to delete all my posts in this thread? Anybody know how?
