ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

And whats to stop someone just closing their negative balance account I might add!

Probably nothing - but if their systems are sophisticated enough it might affect you ability to ever have a FF account with the same airline again (without having to deal with a negative starting balance, anyway). All just speculation, of course.

Citi will definitely claw back on the right issue. In my case, I had one of the original Signature cards and for some reason was overlooked when caps were introduced. I went a few years on this earning well over and then got lazy in transferring the points out.
It cost me from memory around 400K in points slightly lessened after complaining of the retro (something along the lines of putting up with the Gov't is one thing, but not when I have a choice) getting the Select for no extra on the first year.

Ouch, that really sucks. Did they notice the error on their own? Any talk to trying to claw back points you'd already transferred out to airlines?

that's horrible - such a waste of points

Back to the current ATO payment job I have cleared both accounts with a payment so I am good for another 300,000 QF points at the start of this new week. I know I will have to resort to a Westpac co-branded card in May but Westpac is still working so no big issue but I really need QF points at the moment.
It sure looks like this points Fest may stop but it is on right now so there is no time to waste. Points at sub 1 cent are going to get rarer by 2014 it seems.
I was surveyed so I told Amex what I really thought of half a point a dollar for 1.45% making a point cost 2.9 cents before a potential tax credit. That really is a joke seeing the points they buy from Qantas would cost a fraction of this.
Getting points for about 0.25 cents each after tax from the "other guy" seems a dream so long ago but it stopped just a month and a bit ago.
Today it is Hello Albany for an hour. Now Albany is a very pretty retirement spot.

Westpac Kris Flyer Platinum Amex is sill paying 1.5 points per dollar at the ATO for Kris points but it will get cut later in this year.
So that means Kris points for sub one cent each before any tax deduction. They are worth more than that for business class or higher redemptions.

Oh I get surveyed by Amex relatively frequently and give my opinion. I think the latest survey was to gauge why my spending has dropped so much over the last 6 months or so. I can tell they do try to find out patterns, but they do nothing to fix their errors. Arrogance really...

Citi never raised trying to raid the FF points. They just told me a glitch in their systems had been discovered which had allowed early Signature accounts being missed in having points cap applied. Thankfully I wasn't using CC's where charges were involved and I had a good run at their expense.
That was so galling about their recent ATO clawback incurring a charge for nothing.

I had one of the original FEE FREE CITIBANK cards ( still have it) same thing happened to me it just kept awarding points untuil I got a letter telling me about the then cap but I had transferred my points to QFF and Citibabnk have never clawed back my points, still Platinum Signature card and no fees except for loyalty program fee and still getting points....just lucky I guess

So Guru Cove, having read this thread from start to finish my mind is in info overload. My tax bills are nothing like yours ($100k pa)have been paying on EDR but want to be careful not to have my EDR cancelled. Can I pay ATO on my ANZ Platinum Amex no problems at 1.5MR:$1? Never used it before so not sure if it pays MR at 1MR:.75QFF or straight $1:1QFF anyone know?

Better you check ANZ Amex earn rate/transfer rate and points caps because ANZ lost my credit card business more than 10 years ago. They used to be the early market leader and lost their way when the creator of their offering departed. I deal with EDR , Westpac and Amex Ultimate for the time being. Everything may change so be flexible. Wayne Swan is pleased that you are still a taxpayer .

Thanks Cove again, ANZ is also a pain for me, only my reserve card. Stupidly months ago ANZ offered me a free Amex attached to my visa and I said no. I can't remember what the offer was but 1.5:$1 rings a bell. Does anyone out there know if ANZ Amex pays 1.5:$1 at ATO legally? I looked on the T and C and the usual " no govt charges" was there. Anyone paid ATO on ANZ Amex with success?

That would be great to know if it works, please let us.know. I hope it does, as I said earlier the T and C say no "govt charges" but that usually doesn't mean much, good luck.

I also ignored the Amex-attached-to-Visa offer many times, but - encouraged in part by this thread, and my renewed interest in maximizing my points - I looked again and found it still on offer on the website. No questions asked, and I received the Amex card within the week. My account is the Rewards Visa linked to SQ (my preferred airline) and, yes, 1.5:$1 is correct for that Amex. The snag is that 9000 points = only 3000 KrisFlyer miles. Haven't yet tried this Amex for ATO payment, but will very likely be doing so at the end of this month.

1/2 Krisflyer point per $ spent paying ATO with your Amex card does not sound like a good idea to me, when the ATO charges a 1.48% surcharge on Amex payments but MMMV...

The ATO surcharge for Amex is 1.45%; Visa/Mastercard is 0.48% but only 1 point per $1. So, yes, the latter is preferable unless one is really wanting to accumulate points fast.

If you pay ATO with bank branded Amex @ 1.5 QFF points per $1 on say $10,000 @ 1.45% = $145 that gives you points at .66c each versus .48c per point on MC and Visa. Small difference considering what the points are worth on a J class flight.

Well looks like, $1 on Westpac Rewards Amex CC = 2 Westpac points and 3 Westpac points = 1 Krisflyer Point.

So $3 = 6 WBC = 2 KF points.

So, at 1.45% cost of ATO points, paying ATO with this credit card does not look like good value, although I have had a few glasses of a nice red tonight so may have missed something...
