ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Not sure it will have legs for much longer given the upcoming de-val. It's just not cheap enough. Good to see competition in the space, though. Hopefully AMEX will meet in the middle with merchant fees at that time.

Yes but that applies to any of these payment methods. So it has legs till the deval where for Amex if you decide to go this way it is the best game in town.

Cheaper on non-Amex of course via other means but less points.

This method unlike the other Amex methis is as cost effective as using the dragon, but you get more than twice as many points per transaction.

Personally I had been using the Dragon as it has been cheaper per bought point than the Amex as I am not desperate for bought points as I mainly gain cheap to free points for the flights I mainly want to take. So I will give this a while till Deval Day on any tax deductible spend and give my Dragon a break.

There's no disagreement, as the point of my post was that it has no legs after the de-val. I find the alternative non-AMEX 0.8% option good if appropriately assigned to the correct card, but given I don't have the specific single AMEX card that makes this option at the higher cost as profitable as a 1ppd non-AMEX at 0.8%, and as it is only until the de-val in April, not sure how much of a winner it is overall. Each to their own.

For reference (as I am sure I'll be asked) I am using the ANZ 1ppd until $7.5k per month (splitting payments on purpose) and then the balance on dragon at 0.85ppd after birthday bonus.

Edit: Plus, it's 0.8% after 1K per month so whilst a long-winded calculation and having lost the information above to compare it to, I don't think you're really walking away with many more points than me, and I'm not even optimizing it as much as I potentially could using non-AMEX cards, I'm just using what I have.

Its 0.825PPD on the Dragon inc BB. But yes that's one way of looking at it. You're paying around 1cpp @ 0.8%. But you're also limited by a small credit limit on dragon compared to Amex. Plus you're locked into VA/KF or QF. Amex gives you more than that. AM, EY, EK, TG, Marriot to name a few. Also keep in mind Dragon hasn't deval'd yet so it's likely to do so before Amex do again.

So now lets fast forward to post April - where you can earn 1.125PPD (Airline miles) on your Amex Charge, pay your bills at a 1.95% surcharge. If you can tax deduct that fee (say 30% tax bracket), you're effectivly paying 1.2cpp for the flexible airline miles. That equals one way J AU East coast to SIN/Asia for around is around $750++ which is still not bad. We have just been spoilt with our recent(current) earn rate....

PS Dragon is my goto visa/mc (I also have the ANZ as well but for other reasons that mean the 7.5k gets blown through fast).

Used 4 CCs today but ran out of credit until tomorrow. I wish I could load more than $100,000 per card into dragon per day.
