ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I've been using my Amex to pay big bills like ATO, SRO, school fees etc for a while now. Makes a difference.
Is there a way to avoid paying the amex fee when paying your ATO bill. I want to get the points but it will cost me $140 in fees just to do that.
Attention beloved ATO bill payment gurus.

I hold an amex plat edge credit card. I am planning to pay a large Ato bill. The fee is quite high according to the ato website. I want to built up some points, therefore, can someone tell me the best way to go about this to avoid such a high fee.

Not sure how much homework you have done already but there are multiple ways to use Amex for ATO. It currently comes down to direct (quick but costly), payment processor (quite quick, less costly especially if you can tax deduct the fee) or giftcards (very fiddly especially for larger bills but can be very cost-effective)

I'd suggest reading the last year of posts on this thread, reading the relevant AFF editorials and getting a calculator (or spreadsheet) to work out what makes sense for you

Restrained! At least you didn’t tell them to read all 500 pages of the thread!
I did a similar complete read of the old Westfield GC thread a while ago. Even though many of the loopholes had already closed it gave me lots of ideas to take advantage of when new loopholes open (some of the coded messages were funny too)

Meeting other AFFers helps too....I have been told about many tricks and loopholes in person that people would never post online.

Martine was responding to my post, which was to go talk to the Federal Member of Parliament where our head office was based. We had all the information condensed down into a page with dates etc, and the back of the sheet had what the ATO should have done by its own rules, so the MPs staff could follow it up. MPs are very responsive when someone who could or might not vote for them at the next election.

Hi @MARTINE, may I get a clarification of what is the Fed mem route that you are referring to? How did i help solve your issue ? A link would be highly appreciated? Thanks
Hi Mugpink

Go to the website of the federal member in your electorate

They have contact details and you can email them with your issues detailing how your attempts to resolve a Commonwealth matter hit a brick wall.

Ask for their assistance ie ‘here is what happened’, ‘here is what should have happened’ ‘I seek your help to….’

In my ATO issue I tried to finalise a deceased estate but kept getting misinformation, delays and hours of my life I will never get back. Email to fed member and resolved within 24 hrs.

I suggest you do so before election

Does the Officeworks $1000 (+$9 Activation fee) Activ Visa card can be used on Canberra online shop? Is it considered as debit card and incur $0 surcharge?

Good spot. I've not seen this option before. Many similar cards are considered debit. Maybe take one for the team. After all its only $9 for a one off
