BUT ... a little OT. Very annoying when trying to change flight online - doesn't work so I have to ring and do it over phone. Get charged service fee for ringing!!!

My return leg of an ex-BKK return ticket was able to be changed online. No mention of needing to re-verify any credit card.

Actually, it's pretty basic, often fares from those counties to Oz can be significantly less than from Oz to those countries.

e.g. In February, ou can get a return fare from Johannesburg to Sydney for ZAR12K (~AUD1,330) while similar flights/dates on a return fare from Sydney to Johannesburg cost AUD1,970.
But theres no such condition on sales ex SIN where the price differentials can be even bigger (e.g. PER-SIN $930 vs SIN-PER $530) and presumably more of a profit motive given the volumes.

Singapore is not on the list ... maybe it's different for some reason or another:
It's not just Thailand and China you know.

In some countries, before the ticket is issued, the credit card holder must present themselves at the local Qantas office within 24 hours of the booking being created. Countries that this applies to are:

  • China
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Philippines
  • South Africa
  • Thailand

For those who disagreed that this is common practice in Thailand, we just left there and our TG domestic bookings in J, as well as PG booming to MLE required the presentation of the credit card used to make each reservation at check in on the first sectors.

Yes we all agree that's routine but you didn't read this thread it seems. Qantas makes you go to an office in Bangkok within 3 days of booking! ?!

agreed - but that is not the point we are talking about. There is a big difference between having to present yourself at the QF office in downtown Bangkok and showing your credit card at the check-in counter.

If we could make and ticket a booking and then turn up at the airport on the day of travel no one would be complaining. But we are complaining that we can't make bookings outside thailand/china etc etc at all without having o pay the QF booking fee (so they process it as an Australian booking).

As an update, red roo responded to me a couple of days after my original post offering [me] a fix, but i asked him to reply on AFF more generally rather than my PM (by implication making the offer available to everyone). That as not been forthcoming, but there was an undertaking to continue to get the right departments to look at the matter some more.

I'll be changing a booking in the next few days via the QF site, which originated in BKK. It will be interesting if I need to front up to produce my CC - going to be rather difficult as I'm currently in AU!

Hopefully Red Roo will address this sooner, rather than later. . . .

i don't think so. the main people this affects are QFFFers hoping to use FF points to fly around asia. if you are buying a business class ticket it probably originates in AU (so no worries) or you are a bangkok local. There is little incentive for QF to do anything to cut costs for the average FFer.

Changed my flight today ADL-SYD-BKK which was originally booked in BKK. Success at last! No phone call requesting me to front up to the BKK office or the need to run the QF AU money-maker gauntlet. (AKA: QF Customer Call Centre)

New paperwork issued 10 minutes ago - maybe this issue has finally been resolved. . . . . in BKK at least?

Today they are being very generous changing anything to do with flights to/from BKK. The flight timings on QF 023 and 024 have changed and all of the domestic bookings need to be changed as well to accommodate those flying from interstate to SYD.

It would be nice if this issue had been resolved but I suspect that that is not the case. It would be nice to be proved wrong though.

Yes, I now have just under an hour to make any future flights to BKK from ADL - there goes my lounge access. (Tell me again why I bothered to buy QP again someone. Please???? ;) )

I actually like the new flight timings, gets me to where I am going a couple of hours earlier.

you changed an existing booking? for which the credit card had already been verified or booked through the AU call centre? I wouldn't think you would need to do it twice.

Had to pay 835THB extra via CC (difference in fares). Last time I had to do similar, they called for verification. (The flight originated in BKK, not AU, and that's the difference in needing CC verification.) AU originating flights - no problem do it all online with an instant charge to your CC, as they don't require CC verification.

It all goes through just the same on the TH site, you just don't get ticketed or charged, until they actually sight the card, which is a little hard when you're a few thousand miles south of BKK. ;)

Just a perspective in this issue. I just tried to buy a 3G wifi router in Malaysia. The cost is less than AUD 40.00 I'll be there soon and thought it was easier than finding a store here... have it delivered there.

Here is the on-line purchase requirement:
We have received a credit card payment via Global Collect from you and have been advised to seek for verification from you to process your order. At this moment, your order is not yet confirm.

OMG

This puts nothing in perspective. Australians can purchase a ticket using Credit Card ex Bkk on jetstar (and pretty much every other airline) without having to turn up to the Bangkok office

:( It puts into perspective the difficulty of sometimes buying anything on-line by credit card in Malaysia, Thailand, China... . Even if it's low cost. Sorry that I didn't spell that out! :) (I didn't think I'd need to :( )

Red Roo. It has now been nearly three months since I raised this issue and you messaged me to say you had directed the matter to the relevant departments and were waiting for a response.

Can you please provide an update for the AFF community. Three months is sufficient to at least have an indication of (a) why credit card verification is require in person, (b) if credit card fraud is the reason, why exceptions cannot be made for frequent flyers purcasing ticets from their own account, in their own name, and using their own credit card, and (c) why charges for using the Australian call centre to complete ticketing can't be waived.

With thanks

Mel-T
