Heading of to the US later this year and need tips for transferring at Houston , how much time should I allow. Flight lands at Houston hopefully 12:40 and we have 3 hours, but on the way home we only have 1 hour 25 , is that enough time ?

Is it all on one PNR..one "ticket"? If so Id suggest you're fine.

Then you will be fine. If you misconnect, Air NZ will be responsible for either rebooking you or rerouting you to get to your destination. At worst, they will reroute you to LAX and put you on NZ1/NZ5.

You should be fine in both directions with those connecting times on one ticket.
