Checkin will make a call to BF. Last time this happened they asked me to wait… made the call… the agent said ‘I have a dual passport here, can you link it?’. It was dine in about a minute.

NZ border force seem to have less concerns over other passports.
AU has statement "should use AU passports crossing the border" or similar.
NZ does not have those words.

Actually, once the passports are linked - does it then even matter whether you use the Australian passport to travel back from NZ? Could they not process the entry as an Australian (but with the NZ passport) in a similar way to using the NZ passport to exit the country?

I'm wondering about the declaratory visa that dual Aus/other citizens with foreign passports can apply for so that there is a travel authority attached to the foreign passport. Would that even be needed if there is an option to just link passports to allow travel?

I'm pretty sure the linking is only for the purpose of APIS so that the airline is not given a do not board indicator when scanning the passport, not for entering Australia via Smartgate, which you are still required to use the Australian passport for because the New Zealand passport does not have a visa in it, and cannot be granted one.

Check in calls BF and gets a code to link them. Its supposed to be easy but our experience has been otherwise.

i do recall having a border/customs dude pull me up back in 2017 coming back to Oz on a fresh NZ passport, cant recall his words but said I should NOT do that.
I left Oz in 2016 on an AUS passport that expired when I was over working in NZ.
I had the opportunity to become a citizen by descent so got my NZ passport instead.

Anyways I have another question related to dual citizen/passports.
My AUS passport is still expired and have my NZ passport valid, I'm planning to travel to Thailand early 2024 and want to apply for the 6 month VISA and will be flying out from Melbourne.
Question is will it be easy/problem free applying for the VISA using NZ passport with my Australia details?

Or would I be better off getting new AUS passport and traveling with that?

By 'Australian details' are you referring to address etc? If so, it shouldn't be a problem. Plenty of foreign nationals resident here who apply for visas to other countries when needed.

yes like my current residence here in Australia.
i think im over thinking this and should be all goods using NZ passport.
