After a boring Sunday afternoon I decided to list all the Australian airports that I have either landed at or taken off from. I was surprised at just how many there were. I'm also sure I have forgotten some.

And I have Merimbula (MIM) in NSW and Mt Gambier (MGB) in SA, both on QLK Dash-8's.

Interesting that neither have any security checking facilities, which in my experience has pros and cons...

If we’re talking Australia, you really need to put remote places like Coco’s and Christmas Island on the list!

Working on remote islands so am proud of NLK/LDH/KNS.

Airports I’ve been to but haven’t landed or taken off from (often done as a drive by just to check them out) include OOM, KGC, MHU, DPO and KTR.

Well now, this is going to be interesting to try to work out. I have 36 domestic airports listed in my Openflights database (from my 195 total airports globally 😳) and then a couple more which would need to be added due circuits, training and other flights.

NSW. BNK, CFS, NTL, BEO, YLOC, SYD, XRH, CDU, WGA, BHQ, ABX
VIC. MEL, AVV, YMES
QLD. CNS, TSV, HTI, ROK, YWIS, MCY, BNE, YAMB, OOL, LRE
SA. ADL, YPED
TAS. HBA, LST, DPO, BWT, KNS
NT. DAR, GOV, KTR, YDWF, ASP, AYQ
WA. PER, YPEA, KGI
ACT. CBR

So 41 total. Need to get out more. Certainly want to get to those offshore islands already mentioned.

I reckon there will be a few private pilots, glider, helo and/or balloon pilots who will be over a hundred. They should be recognisable by inclusions such as arr/dep from places such as Kings Park (WA), a grid reference in the Hunter Valley or street address in northern Canberra! 😜

I'm also in the same boat as a private pilot in both fixed wing powered and glider aircraft. I'd be up in the low hundreds, so too numerous to list.

I've also had a lot of time in amphibious aircraft (ie floatplanes) so could list a few unusual "airports" such as the waters in the Montebello Islands, taking off and landing adjacent to a former nuclear test site 😉

My most unusual 'airport' code though, when flying in helicopters - is ZZZZ. Anyone care to guess what that code represents?

ZZZZ - is an indicator used to tell enroute control you’re single pilot ops and you’ve gone to sleep. You have set an alarm for your predicted descent point, but if you overfly your destination, they should yell really loud over the comms! 🫢

Of course with Google these days, it really can be Satsuma (mandarin? airport) in Japan, or in your case, operating to a point that is not an aerodrome.

I knew I would miss one. Add Amberley to my list

Not many for me, but I haven't seen COJ (Coonabarabran, NSW) mentioned yet. I did a few SYD <> COJ trips in the mid 1980's. From memory, they were 8 or 9-seater milk runs via DGE (Mudgee). On one trip I was the only passenger continuing on to COJ and the pilot invited me to sit up the front and don some headphones.

EDIT: I recall on one trip out of SYD to COJ via DGE that one woman couldn't believe that this was the right plane; it was way too small. What was she expecting? A 747? 😄
