Phew - how lucky was that - for a minute there I thought the desired criteria may have rendered Bondy ineligible!

Alan Bond? Besides the fact that he's deceased, under AFF Australian of the Year Criteria (TM) he would be excluded under each of:

* Celebrity;
* CEO; and
* Sportspeople (marginally).

Must have 5000 likes and 2500 posts on AFF

For those thinking of nominating me I need to advise you that I have decided to withdraw my eligibility and let others have a go.

:p

And that doesn't even take into account the criminality.

I agree that Aust of the Year should be a standout & this years selection seems to fit the bill in many ways. I have a mate who was awarded the PSM-after over 40 yrs of service & working his way through that world I think it is great he has received recognition for his efforts?

The selection criteria for Australian of the Year awards:
  • Significant contribution to the Australian community and nation
  • An inspirational role model for the Australian community
  • Demonstrated excellence in their field
  • The Local Hero award acknowledges a significant contribution at local community level
People can make their own minds up about those who have been chosen in the past :)

No Rosie Batty didn't do it for me.
The 2 women I have met in the last 10 years that would really bring home to the majority what trials our indigenous community have would be my choices but unfortunately I have forgotten their names.But they were full blooded,both spoke well and neither subscribed to the grievance industry.Proud,beautiful women.
The first I met in Mt.Isa.She was a victim of domestic violence-and the majority of women who do suffer are indigenous.Her husband was an alcoholic,violent and would bring other women and young girls home for sex.she finally cracked and went to see her husband at his pub in Cloncurry.called him outside abnd a few minutes later went back in saying-Clarrie has a pain in his chest.He had a large kitchen knife sticking out of his chest.
Now if she were white she quite possibly would have received a suspended sentence.She got 14 years.Prison in Townsville.Got parol after ~ 11 years with a condition she stayed in Townsville.Her mob was in Mt.Isa.She was never going to stay in Townsville so was arrested when she got back to Mt.Isa.Parol revoked and sentence to be served in full back in Townsville.
Fortunately police are not skilled in the administration of Insulin so she got too much-low blood sugar-to hospital.I was on duty and although the medical issue was resolved in a couple of hours we kept her for a week so her family all got to spend some time.
The cruelty did not end there.She was taken to Townsville in the back of a paddy wagon in January.

The second woman I met last year in Kalgoorlie.She is the last remaining resident of the Coonana community near the SA border.That in itself is a sad reflection on the Australian and UK governments as it was one of the camps set up for the indigenous people of the Maralinga area.They were all moved out.Successive WA Governments have gradually cut services including a couple of years ago power and water.As she says it is where most of the family she knew are buried and she isn't going to leave.Fortunately there are some caring people and a well dug and they were collecting money to set up solar power for her.She is very intelligent and a dignified woman.An ideal candidate to prick our nations conscience-on both right and left of the argument.

It was not so much her story, but how she handled it that stood out so it seems. Anyway, it's moot.

I guess many have faced similar awful issues and have made a difference. Daniel Morcombe's parents come to mind. But nothing to do with domestic violence.

Why moot? It's a discussion about the qualities of Australian of the Year?

The loss of her son was tragic but the police involved were "hung out to dry" by force command. The distortions and half truths that should have been debunked, but never were, were did a great disservice to those police who bent over backwards to assist.
One of those cops is a close friend.

Rosie Batty was a unfortunate selection for Australian of the Year. She was used to perpetuate the myth that "all domestic violence is committed by men and that all men are innately violent misogynists". It also detracted from the need for society to critically evaluate the role of women in the cover-up and maintenance of situations of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a complex area that requires us to recognise that a dichotomous black/white diagnosis of the causes and symptoms will not solve the problem - when have you ever heard an anti-domestic violence advocate discuss the dependent and ineffective women and mothers who take their children back, time and again, to situations of domestic violence? Or the penchant of some women to escape one abusive spouse, only to take up with another brute just like the first to keep the floggings coming?

Thank goodness that in 2017 we have an AotY who isn't another self-loathing wrist-slasher with an ingrained, psychotic hatred of Australia and its history.

IYHO of course - did you ever consider there is a remote possibility that your opinions are not always 100% correct? Clearly you have not been subjected to or even witness to the plethora of 'glass ceiling' situations that females encounter on a daily basis throughout their lives. And my apologies to the wider AFF community if my grammer is not as polished as yours may be.

Now you're being silly. An opinion can't be correct or incorrect, it's an opinion. And like noses, everyone has one !
As for your grammar, you are allowed to proof read, spell check and insert full stops and comma's where needed.

As for glass ceiling's and other privations women in our society suffer from, I am confident the vast majority of contributors on this site are in agreement when it comes to equity and equality for men and women.

Hmmm....

Nocookies | The Australian

The Australian of the Year, Alan *Mackay-Sim, has promised Polish doctors he will publicly explain he was not involved in the groundbreaking research which led to a paralysed man being able to walk again.
The Polish doctors said they had received an email from Professor Mackay-Sim explaining that he didn’t write the submission to the Australia Day Council which claimed he played a “central role in the world’s first successful restoration of mobility in a quadriplegic man”.
