Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

That was until the 18-year-old tested positive again - less than three weeks after leaving isolation.

So probably the same infection and not a new one, since you can continue to shed virus for 6 months post infection and test positive on PCR for that long. Hence why you need recovery certificates to travel.

Still doesn't make sense to me why whole schools are closing in WA for 2 weeks because of 1 or 2 cases. Unless these are tiny schools with blended year groups, surely you only quarantine the exposed classes.

Even in conservative SA they aren't closing classes. Well, that's the plan. It hasn't been tested yet.

During Alpha and Delta schools here would close for 1 day for a deep clean, then all but close contacts would return. Now provided you RAT negative you can continue to come to school, and are no longer a close contact.

If a grade 6 teacher is positive, make no sense that first grade has to stay home and iso. But then WA still clinging to covid zero mindset.

Indeed, while the 'crush and kill' rhetoric is no longer used, some of the actions would suggest it is still being pursued at some level.

Not that uncommon to have prolonged PCR positivity
First step to confirm early reinfection is combination of symptoms and RAT
There are fancier things to do if there remains doubt
Are you suggesting same infection?

Not so sure, as according to article, left isolation, RAT-, (assume no symptoms) and then acquired new symptoms.

If its shedding, is it common to have (new/different) symptoms again???

First few para - so apparently need to test again (only for new symptoms) even within 4 weeks/1 months after recovered positive

When Sydneysider Nat Sorensen recovered from Covid at the start of the year, she thought she was at least safe from the virus for a month.

That was until the 18-year-old tested positive again - less than three weeks after leaving isolation.

“I was shocked,” she told news.com.au. “It’s pretty unlucky.”

To my mind there is no definitive proof she has COVID-19 again. She could easily have any other coronavirus or respiratory infection and still be shedding COVID-19 from her prior infection.

Now the population is mixing again we are actually seeing a bit of flu now

Indeed after 2 years with a handful of Influenza A and Influenza B cases and all that PCR testing, we have seen more flu cases in the first 2 weeks of 2022 than all of 2021

Are they actually closing for 2 weeks though? From what I have read it is for a deep clean, but the affected staff and students are having to isolate for two weeks. ABC has reported that the first school affected should have reopened today. For us who are parents over here (hand up here), it will make this school year difficult.

I always try to wait until latish May for flu shot as there is some views that after about 3 months efficacy decreases.

And a fourth school in WA (Atwell College). Seems to be affecting year 12 students (going into 14 day iso) , don't think other years are affected at this point.

Do reports seem to indicate school close for a day (for deep clean perhaps) and affected/exposed students and staff need to isolate?

That is what I was told last year. We always get ours early as MrP developed flu one year in March before we'd been vaccinated. I was told because of the auto immune stuff to get a booster in July, but well, Covid happened.

I have not heard anything about the school closing, just that the Year 12 students that were in contact with the positive case have to isolate. It sounds as though the case was a student.

It sounds like NSW will try again for self-regulation/responsibility at end of Feb

First few para

The NSW Tourism Minister says he is confident two of the state’s most annoying rules — bans on singing and dancing — will be gone for good by the end of February.

The restrictions were imposed in December in response to the Omicron wave which mandated masks indoors, imposed two square metre density limits for hospitality venues, and banned singing and dancing at pubs, clubs and music festivals.

They were extended last week until at least February 27.

Speaking at the launch of the 2022 Great Southern Nights festival line-up, Stuart Ayres said he was “pretty confident” the restrictions won’t be extended past that date.

“We think that we’re getting through the worst of Omicron,” he said on Thursday.

“We have to live with Covid, we can’t let this lock us in our homes.”
