Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I certainly wouldn’t let (us) SA people into my state currently.

On the contrary. We have learned that unless tight controls are implemented immediately the situation can very quickly get out of hand. Refer Victoria
Contact tracing, which was completely inadequate and amateur hour in Victoria's "second wave" outbreak.

GB is very popular for her commonsense approach to all things Covid. That said, this pragmatic decision to stay open to SA is sure to mean that Qld stays closed to Greater Sydney.

You thought you were getting in? This is just going to give them the final nail for the meeting in a couple of weeks....

Nope as stated nuemrous times on this thread I have neved belived AP has ever had any inetention of letting greater Sydney back in this year, irrespective of whether we get to the 28 days threshold or not. As you say this just gives AP another reason to stay closed.

Guess there wil be some great last minute bargains (or some very empty hotels) for Queenslander, Territorians or Taswegians wanting to holiday in Qld over xmas, as now more last minute cancellations come from SA (afetr all the cancellations already from NSW and Vic).

From ABC News:

Queensland shutting to South Australia from midnight

Queensland has become the latest state to shut out South Australians.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed Adelaide was now listed as a hotspot in Queensland and the sunshine state would be shutting its southern neighbours out from 11.59pm tonight.

Any South Australian who arrives in Queensland from midnight onwards will be required to complete two weeks in hotel quarantine.

Recent arrivals currently in Queensland will need to get a coronavirus test.

Queensland's chief health officer Dr Jeanette Young said Adelaide will now need to have 28 days of no community transmission to lose its hotspot classification.

Good sensible decision by QLD

Looks like we timed our holiday perfectly. Having just spent the last 2 and a bit weeks in the NT and QLD we only got home yesterday morning and looks like we won’t be going anywhere for awhile

Again.... what definition of community transmission do they mean? Boy I wish we had a National Cabinet or something to work on these sorts of things like nationally agreed terminology ;)

A: Mystery case?
B: Or any community transmission?

Because if its B, this is a new rule....

what definition of community transmission do they mean?

Whilst they belive they have already linked the source to worker at hotel quarantine meaning its no longer a mystery, I belive that as a new cluster having taken everyone by surprise (as opposed to all cases being linked to a known cluster), this is why Qld consider it communty spread. It actually makes more sense than allowing regional NSW in when its regional NSW that has the most recent cluster in NSW.

You really have to laugh at the extreme panic this “virus” has instilled in some people. What have we learnt? Nothing. Given, after a tiny number of cases in Adelaide, all we’ve heard about today is “closing borders” proves Australia has no idea how to manage this.

It also proves that popular politics playing a xenophobic angle works amongst the community. Doesn’t seem much has changed since the One Nation days of the 90s.

Lest we forget, the betting in July, August, September & October by many was that Qld would re-open borders the Monday after the state election as they were only closed for 'political reasons' to generate support for the election.

Now that straw man has been exposed, new theories have been required. What I find strange is how rarely WA receives even a fraction of the attention for its border policies...

Worthwhile remembering that NSW's botched handling of its borders, despite some grandstanding in early March, is what first led to 38 regions across Australia getting their first CV cases. As has been shown overseas (eg all of Europe) repeatedly is that it is better to risk criticism for 'over reaction' than for burying thousands of extra people per day.

2020 11 14 France daily cv.jpg
2020 11 14 Germany daily cv.jpg
2020 11 14 Italy daily cv.jpg
2020 11 14 UK daily cv.jpg

One aspect that is either encouraging (glass half full) or alarming (half empty) - is that the UK, French & Italian daily death rate has reduced to a fraction per 100 daily cases vs the 1st wave. Unfortunately the German rate has not - whereas Germany was one of the standouts during their 1st wave - the daily number of deaths is close to the peak of the 1st wave vs perhaps 1/4 to 1/6th in the case of the other 3.

No surprise deaths have reduced to a fraction. The latest estimate I heard from data analysts was that on top of knowing how to treat better, due to extensive testing regimes the number of cases being registered as positive today in major European countries are approx 25% of the number of actual positives that were in the community through late March and early April.

I guess time will tell. You characterise it as panic, I characterise that as hyperbole. But you are entiltled to your opinion - I dont have to agree with it.

The Germans probably had better testing in the first wave than the other countries mentioned, and so probably had a higher proportion of infected people get tested to become an actual case.

Perhaps:

* WA has been written off - certainly by the WA Premier’s own words speculation should be much less

* Only a fraction of immediate border interaction ( people living close to border and used to crossing with ease) as QLD/ NSW
