Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Anyone else with anxiety through the roof? Couldn't give a toss about 3 cases in a state of 7.5 million about 1,000km away, but with the WA government reactions of the past it feels impossible not to be very anxious!
It isn't the actual number that is worrying but where the heck they got it from that is the concerning part. There could be 20 cases but all linked and under control so not an issue. Two pop ups out of the blue? Well, time will tell.

Yup we have multiple flights booked for family over the next few days and just before Xmas. Praying for a rational response (lol) from WA and also praying NSW just holds it together and jumps on these with the same level of effort and vigour that VIC did the last of their clusters.

I don’t think anyone is tremendously surprised this has happened again in NSW they clearly have underlying community transmission bubbling along at very low levels, and I’m more than fine with that. It’s just the other states reactions to this that freaks us out!

Nothing still in VIC thankfully

Though sooner or later, and just as in NSW now, SA recently and NZ often there will be another leakage from quarantine/aircrew/shipping, we will.

But just as with all those cases it just needs speedy action to jump on it and suppress the outbreak. It is now known what to do and jurisdictions are now all (well some remain to be tested, but we hope they are) well set up to it.

So it should just be covid business as usual now and to role out all those combined control measures. ie Increased local testing, contract tracing, isolating all known close and probable contacts (two rings) etc and not wholesale panic or state border closures.

4 cases in Northern Beaches now in total. 2 more identified half an hour ago.

Two new COVID-19 cases identified in Sydney's northern beaches, with NSW recording 5 community transmission cases in 24 hours

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is urging residents of Sydney’s northern beaches with “the mildest of symptoms” to get tested for COVID-19 after two new cases were identified overnight.

The new cases bring the total number of new cases announced in the last 24 hours to five – including two others on the northern beaches.

Ms Berejiklian said she received confirmation half an hour earlier that “in addition to those three cases which the public is already aware of there have been an additional two new cases on the northern beaches”.

She said the latest case she was made aware of was at Frenchs Forest.

Breaking: Sydney couple allegedly didn't isolate

A NSW health official has made a stunning allegation about a Sydney couple who have tested positive for coronavirus, claiming they did not isolate while awaiting their results.

Sydney was put on high alert yesterday after a 45-year-old man, who transports international aircrew from the airport, tested positive to coronavirus.

A few hours later, a couple, aged in their 60s and 70s from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, also tested positive to coronavirus.

The couple’s diagnosis sparked a flurry of warnings for the region, with health officials ordering people from a handful of venues to get tested and isolate.

Speaking to The Australian, a health official, not permitted to speak publicly, alleged the couple did not isolate.
“They took a long time to track down,” the official said.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian today confirmed two new cases for the state – with the virus spreading to Frenchs Forest in Sydney’s north.
The five infections are NSW’s first cases of community transmission since December 3.

Long (spaced out admittedly) queue at Northern Beaches Hospital Covid Clinic today

I kinda wish that McGowan would just close his border already rather than keeping everyone in suspense so that people can start changing their plans.

It's interesting the furore after the bus driver contracted it, and the bleating about the need for management of hotel crew to be tightened. There was even a Channel 9 film who followed a crew (SQ) from airport to hotel, filming them getting on and off the bus at hotel. The interactions with the bus driver of the crew seemed no different to the interaction IME with passengers going to quarantine hotels (i.e. no interactions but the driver was obviously driving the bus with the people on board).

Also big hoo haa about airline crew just going into hotel, interacting with hotel staff and "checking in as normal". In my experience over many years, it seems normal practice for crew to pick up an envelope with their room key etc for the assigned room. No contact with staff. Also that they aren't escorted to their rooms (well isn't that a good thing, one less point of contact?).

But hey, let's not pass on the opportunity for a few nice juicy stories that will enhance clicks and ratings.

As we have seen everywhere the message isn’t getting through that after being tested you must go home and isolate until your results come back. Far too many people getting tested and just going about their daily lives

I know you were joking but a lot of us are in really fragile siutations and WA is a tinder box of knee jerk decisions when it comes to border reactions....

Good news is though we got one of my family (older matriarch!) onto an earlier Qantas service from SYD-PER - they didn't have work commitments so we have one away at least....

The other 2 community transmission cases will fall into tomorrows reporting.

Testing very low, should jump for tomorrow.

the need for management of hotel crew to be tightened.

Well it appears not all international Aircrew are staying at hotels, and of those that are, thaey are not necessarily the quaratine ones managed by ADF, NSW Police. This was how the hotel worker was exposed, not in the Qurantine hotel where they also worked but next door in the regualr hotel where US Air Crew were staying. They also have the option to isolate at home.

'Doesn't make sense' to treat flight crews as less risky than passengers, epidemiologist says this article states:

Australian-based crews must enter quarantine upon their return to Australia. This lasts for 14 days or until their next international departure — whichever is shorter.

But they do not have to quarantine in hotels. They can quarantine at home if they live alone, or have a separate bathroom and sleeping area to the rest of their household. They can also take a domestic flight to their next point of departure from Australia if necessary.

Even when they do choose to quarantine in hotels, they are not subject to the same treatment as international travellers, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said.

He said the "inclination" of the NSW Government at this point was to quarantine international air crew in the same way as any other international visitor or Australian returning home from overseas.

"The difference would be that they are in a quarantine environment but not necessarily for the full 14 days, because they have turnarounds between 24 and 72 hours," he said.

I would think it would be be wise to put inetrnational crew in airport hotels (walking distance of terminal if possible) so they dont have to be driven into the city and back, make properties airline crew only.

I do wonder if any of these international crews have been "ïsolating" on the northern beaches and actually been out for a run on the beach etc when they shoudlnt have been since their movements arent monitored.

Its not unusual for several air crew to group together and rent an aprtment in a city they fly in and out of regualrly. When I first moved into my place, there were 6 international hosties who used to rent a 2 bedroom apartment in my strata, I used to see them coming and going all the time, evenn shared a cab to airpot with one of them once.

It’s ridiculous - this late in the saga everyone knows you have to isolate - it’s not a long wait. Mr FM went and got tested some months ago - we were pretty sure it was just a cold, but he did it and then we cancelled a vet appointment and a hair appointment and waited. It was less than 24 hours and it came back negative and we could go back to normal. It’s really not that much of an imposition and my hairdresser was very appreciative and made a real effort to book me in again as soon as possible.

10-11k a day (except on weekends) has been the average for a while now, its not particularly low testing figure. Sure we had 19-20k test per day when there were known community outbreaks, and we wil see a jump in testing in northern beaches and northern suburbs, but doutful there wil be jumps in areas with no reported cases.

Vic has been sitting on about 9k a day and Qld never gets much above 3k.

Well Australian based aircrews should have the same requirements as returning travellers but are there any at the moment anyway, other than charter repatriation flights?

For international aircrew, we get daily buses here (at a quarantine hotel close to the airport) dropping and picking up crew - same time each day. What they are missing is the police motorcycle escort (is that really necessary for crew?). Also I am guessing (and based on the nine report) they simply pick up their envelope with keys and go straight to their rooms. Whilst there is a chance, unless on a security monitored floor, that they go to each other rooms, who cares? They'll be gone in 24-48 hrs anyway, and no longer Australia's problem, as long as they don't interact with staff.

Also, a big part of international arrivals seemed to be theatre, there were loads of ADF and police personnel watching and loading/unloading buses, and even ADF personne (or was it police) l were doing check ins at the hotel. Is that necessary for air crew? Maybe one person to accompany. The hotel knows exactly how many rooms and who will be in them. Perhaps an area for improvement is that the airlines require their crew to put their own baggage onto the bus trailer and retrieve it - that way ensuring contact with driver is minimised.
