Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Now look to California where masks were mandated in mid June.

And they have also been in lockdown of various strictness since then and severe lockdown since early December when the case number reached 1.2 million. Now over 2.2 million.Cases up over 90%,deaths up over 25% in a month despite this.

And now they start the year with record cases and deaths with ICU capacity at 0%.

Just because they were mandated didn't mean that people were obeying. Can't tell you how many people I encountered who refused to wear masks. A typical example was the 86 yo COVIDiot at the pharmac_ who was arguing with the pharmacist about how he had no right to tell him what to do and what where his qualifications to be able to discuss CV? That tells you the level of stupidity that was being demonstrated each and every day. Amazingly a lot of the anti maskers were people who would fall into the vulnerable group, people over 70 who believed every word a certain politician mentioned. And there was absolutely no enforcement from law enforcement if people chose not to wear masks.

I think you've just made the perfect case for border closures :(

I thought they were open to greater Sydney at that time. Fair point.

However given anywhere up to 45% of people with Covid 19 are basically asymptomatic, there is a risk and chance in opening up at any time. If you are desperately wanting no virus at all.
It’s playing the odds isn’t it. Canberra tries to be proportionate and only asks people not to travel when there is a high risk and will open up again as soon as it can. E.g. there are no restrictions as yet on people from Melbourne travelling to Canberra. Certainly doesn’t ask for 28 days of no transmission or anything like that. People from Sydney have been able to travel to Canberra for most of this year, so not a big ask to keep away for a few weeks until the situation becomes clearer.

Any way to find out by country where the overseas infections arrived from?
An acquaintance who works for NSW public service told me about a month ago that in Sydney most of the positive cases come from US, UK and the Indian sub-continent. He said that is to be expected for two reasons - most of the inward passengers are travelling from those countries and COVID is seriously out of control in those countries.

Some concern with this BWS in NSW, clearly an infected staff member has worked there for 9 days in the Xmas rush....

Coronavirus NSW 'High levels of concern' about BWS store at cluster epicentre

The list of high-risk venues continues to grow for NSW, with health authorities issuing an urgent late night warning for the suburb of Berala.

Anyone who went to the BWS bottle shop in the western Sydney suburb during long parts of the day between December 22-31, right at the heart of the festive season, could be at risk.

Given Vic has taken a WA approach to NSW. I was on a long morning walk today and trying to consider - at what point will the border with NSW open again? Even late March seemed rather soon in my mind, which of course made me rather sad!

Late March for Vic Border to NSW?

My personal guess is much earlier. Progressively from sometime in Jan as I am confident that numbers in both NSW and Vic will continue to drop. Hopefully in both states without too many hiccups. Though hiccups can happen as people do mix and virus is very transmissible..

Won't be a long time, as Vic and NSW not hamstrung by WA and QLD 28 days no community transmission requirement.
