Good news and steps for eastern seaboard travel opening back up!

Perfect timing for my sister who heads down on Monday! We were almost about to push the flight back a few more days! We also have about 10 staff heading south next week, phew.

Hopefully this new local case in Sydney is linked quickly and VIC/Sydney restrictions can follow suit soon.

Vic relaxes Qld border restrictions

From 6pm tonight, Premier Daniel Andrews says these local government areas will turn from red to orange zones:
  • Brisbane
  • Moreton Bay
  • Logan
  • Ipswich
  • Redlands
People coming to Victoria from Brisbane will still need to apply for a permit, get a test within 72 hours and remain in isolation until they get a negative result.

The Premier says he hopes to include parts of Greater Sydney in the orange zone in the next few days.

One probably-linked case should hardly be frown material.

I can assure you that for me it is very much frown material as it means that clients of mine are now increasing likely to be prevented (or have the confidence to) from travelling from Sydney to Qld in Feb. I was hoping it was over in NSW. So that is probably a $50K+ frown for me.

Completely and utterly empathise and understand.

I’m not clinically / medically worried about 1 case, I have confidence NSW will manage it.

I also with you - I’m worried what this does to our business because of the way certain states (namely QLD and WA) react to it.

Yes. Though Vic too has in recent times become more strict on travel restrictions as well as has SA.

Odd right? Why take aim at Victoria when the Cth would have been the ones that allowed the flights in in the first place? What about international caps?

AJs comments seem focused on QF's bottom line, no doubt mindful of domestic flight disruptions into Vic.

I wonder if QF is providing any of the charters for tennis players?
Odd? Not in my view.

He is running a business under pressure, of vourse he is looking at the bottom line. But it is a service business, and I am sure he also has an eye on his clients.

The last comment about AU charters is what is odd. Right?

Fair enough. In that case you're stuffed.

Online sales have boomed in the pandemic, and a fare chunk of that gets delivered by air freight as part of the logistics chain.
ie I ordered a replacement brake light for my 4WD from Thailand.

Then air freight for many other reasons. Also freight out, even if WA lobster sales to China have dipped.

Not all comes on just the dedicated freight carriers who have their own planes, and some of those firms also sub-contract freight to airlines.

Friend of mine flew in from Europe on EK just before Christmas (allowing two week's quarantine). Said most of the business and economy cabins were filled with packages or freight.

Another friend flew in a couple of days ago from Auckland on a 'non-sterile' flight (not part of the bubble). NZ was flying a 789 from AKL to BNE with just 30 pax. So cargo must be making that flight economic.

Senator Birmingham saying 20 more Commonwealth flights to be facilitated ; will go to Howard Springs, ACT and Tasmania outside the caps.
Seats on cancelled Emirates to be allocated to other airlines flying to east coast.

With the reduced international arrivals cap, what does people think about the idea that anyone who is leaving Australia now will jump to the back of the returning queue. Surely that's fairer than what we have now?

It seems to me that most of the new infections are from returned Australians/Permanent Residents (NOT returned "travellers", I hope!), does anyone knows whether the returned pax are sort of grouped together for HQ purposes? e.g. European contingent to Hotel A, North America contingent to Hotel B, S.E. Asia contingent to Hotel C etc etc.

From what I could piece together after my flight to SYD last month it was separated by flight/type of traveller not point of origin.

All the singles/couples from our flight went to one hotel (Pullman Sydney Airport) whilst families went to different accommodation (apartments I believe). That same day and the following day I saw more arrivals at the hotel but nothing after that. I guess it makes most sense to clump arrivals on same day or two in same hotel then do the deep clean etc before the next lot of arrivals.

Personally I disliked having to come back from a country that is low risk, mixing on plane and bus and then in same hotel as travellers originating from higher risk places - but not much you can do about that.

Exactly the point I am getting at. IMHO, it makes more sense to group HQ cases by countries/regions. Mixing them can put low risk pax to becoming high risk during bus rides and HQ.

Both are in the too hard basket....lol. Involves too much detail/red tape, which in turn would require teams of different skills in 5 different States doing different risk assessments.

They have enough trouble just getting hotel quarantine with similar baseline standards.

Next focus would be remote quarantine.

This may be enforceable with the tours lesser lights but if a Top 20 player gets caught up in this expect them to insist the condition is waived or that they be allowed to travel home immediately.

In Vic they do not even allow positive aircrew to fly out anymore. So I doubt a positive passenger could. I don't know what SA do.

Today's Vic DHHS report..

Part of (and note the new AO case on the second flight will be in addition to this)

Victoria has recorded three new cases of coronavirus since yesterday in returning international travellers in hotel quarantine.
The new cases are in a man aged in his 50s, a woman aged in her 30s and a woman aged in her 20s.
For the the tenth consecutive day, Victoria has recorded no new locally acquired cases of coronavirus.
The number of active cases in Victoria is now 26, made up of 7 locally acquired cases, which is a decrease of five since yesterday, and 19 cases in returned overseas travellers in hotel quarantine, an increase of three since yesterday.
An aircrew member and Australian Open participant who is not a player have been transferred to a health hotel following positive test results for coronavirus (COVID-19).
The passenger result came in after midnight Friday night and will be counted in tomorrow’s figures. The aircrew member and the passenger have been interviewed and transferred to a health hotel as per normal processes for positive cases.
All remaining 66 passengers on the flight have been determined to be close contacts. Any players and support people will not be able to leave quarantine to attend training. The remaining flight crew all tested negative and were permitted to fly out without passengers directly to their home port. They left at 7am today.
Upon arrival to Australia all players are immediately placed in a secure quarantine environment for 14 days under the authority of COVID Quarantine Victoria and will undergo a more rigorous testing schedule than for most returning travellers.

So Spurrier more generous than her Victorian counterparts then?
Dont know if it's the case now but at the very beginning, restaurants in Adelaide CBD were providing the meals. Everyone was very happy. I think possibly as she is a practising paediatrician that she has a very kind heart when it comes to the individuals.
