Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Before we start throwing rocks at sick people, it reads that the person may have been self administering and possibly did not disclose they were using it.

Unfortunately if you read the release and some of the news, it appears that this person may well be the one now in ICU which of course is tragic but if they were using a neb then perhaps had a contributing condition leaving them more susceptible in the first place. I haven't had time to corroborate this just reading quickly the notes and news and it appears this may be the case.

Regardless of who is in ICU, best wishes to them and their family and hope they recover.
Definitely not throwing anything at anyone. I too am wishing the patient a speedy recovery.
I am just pointing out that there may be a difference between how we now manage patients in hospital with their own portable devices in light of the risk of aerosolization and how they were managed by authorities in hotel quarantine.
I’m sure in time they will undertake a review of their use.

In a closed hotel room, what's the additional risk from these devices versus say someone coughing or sneezing.

So how did covid get in the nebuliser

Or are we saying the person who's it was, had covid already and it was them spreading unknowingly

I agree with @Princess Fiona, I would've thought a robust regime that took months to set up and has a dedicated agency for operations would have thought about the little things like this. Otherwise what was the time and money for.

Vic press conference announced that nebulisers (and CPAPs?) will be banned from HQ rooms. Presumably those that require use of them will be moved to dedicated facilities or hospitalised.

Kind of suggests that was the culprit then.

Quite possible yes which is actually quite good news that it was something quite obtuse and left field not something systematically wrong.

And they caught all the cases very very early. Feel awful for the poor person in ICU though :(

Next week SA, in addition to the Med Hotels for quarantine people, is also setting up a speciality hospital environment for travellers etc testing positive. Manned by Health and Police only.

NSW has been doing this for at least 8 months. Anyone who tests positive on arrival (or at any point during their HQ) is transferred to one of 2 dedicated medi-hotels which are staffed by NSW health and NSW police.

The regular HQ hotels are staffed by security and supervised by police and ADF.

The 3rd catgory of HQ is the dedicated ones for air crew.

NSW, given their numbers from overseas, have done a great job through all this.

No one has been perfect through this. Most have learned as they go, NSW are clearly and absolutely the best performing state government in the country.

Victoria is a standout worst, WA have been very successful but it's unfortunate that has come at the cost of free movement and travel instead of effective government.

It’s not black and white. Victoria performed atrociously for the first 6 months of the pandemic. But during the last 6 months they learnt, altered resourcing and have managed extremely well.

Well, no other state has anywhere near the community infections or deaths tally that Victoria has, so having learned their lessons following their experiences or otherwise, it's pretty obvious they're the worst performer.

Groan. SA is making noises about changes with the Victoria border. Just when you think it is safe to dip your toes into interstate travel for work. We need to stop doing this.

And, as of Midnight, SA is closed to people from Greater Melbourne. 😡

No real driver (certainly within the state governments) to make it stop. So, until something changes, this will continue. Whether the vaccine will be that something remains to be seen....

And Tasmania has hidden under the doona for the past 6 months, so you wouldn’t know where we stand 🥺
Oh cool lets start this super interesting, off topic 'which state is the worst / best over the last year according to my own opinion' fight again.
Hasn’t that theme been a staple of this thread almost from the start?😇

Judicious use of plastic sheeting over doorways and duct tape may help. Add a bit of damp cheesecloth hanging in the room, bagged daily in glad bags, dated. and test it for viral load all over the place, or after an event. Repeat at cleaners and guards rooms. And too bad that root-cause analysis was not done - see older posts of mine. Place a UV lamp in the hallway, with a sensor that switches off if air pressure(lifts or doors) change, or IR of a human. Things like a bathroom fan turning on, or someone opening a 1 foot by one foot ceiling panel could do it.

Selfishly, I just want to fly OS again. The new South African virus is different enough that a third jab or booster will be required. The vaccine companies are working on it. The absolute take-home is the Oxford one, will almost certainly fail the fortress Australia no-fly nanny test.
Medically, I am not sure if it is wise to give 3 Andreno monkey flu delivered shots in succession - as it may LOWER a response or worse. I predict the rose colored glasses vaccine rollout plans will get busted midway, when the bogans hear that it will NOT enable them to travel to Bali. I call this the 'Whats in it for me test' and in the 18-40 age groups not dying, is not a sellable message.

I liked a comment on the radio - Quarantine is not a Federal responsibility if you are a human, but if you were a horse, you go into a Federal quarantine facility. Maybe Mr Ed can assume that ministerial spokeshorse role.

News: NZ will give jabs to the frontline first contact tip of spear workers first.

And that friends, is very bad news for OS travel.
