Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

I am somewhat skeptical about what I was seeing re SQ...i.e. A380/77W options aplenty. Something is not quite right about that.

Also their own website says:
Singapore Airlines

Enjoy your Miles

As of September 2012, you will be able to use your LifeMiles to redeem tickets or to obtain Business Class or First Class upgrades on flights operated by Singapore Airlines that apply.

I did say it seems a bit too good to be true! My dummy booking was for Jan 2013 BTW.

I did a random MEL-NYC booking for Nov this year. It showed SQ Y on the way back JFK-FRA-SIN but no J or F (and not direct all J EWR-SIN) which would make sense.

I think a big difference between LM and USDM is that USDM is great for really long, really complicated itineraries that you find piece by piece and manage to get the call centre to agree to book, however, there are all sorts of rules about stopovers, directions etc to fall within the award pricing meaning you have to spend a HUGE amount of time making sure your itinerary falls within their strict rules (and hope that they will be able to find the flights you find).

LM on the other-hand is a much simpler 'per leg' booking system meaning there are no strict rules and you just pay for as many legs as you want. It may be slightly more expensive but you are much more likely to get the routing (i.e. as many stopovers) as you want.

I'm extremely impressed with their online award booking system already.

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

I also tried looking in December for SYD-BUD and SYD-JKF, nothing in F or J, 1 in Y.

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

Let's just say if they have a 100% buy promo I will not be bothering with US DM at all. Lifemiles could not be simpler.

I tried a dummy booking MEL-NRT(stop)-MNL(dest)-MEL. This is my dream itinerary for my 30th but I dont even think its possible on US DM because the destination is so much backtracking and MNL is not a *A hub.

For your proposed route, correctly NRT is your destination with MNL as your stopover.

As a betting man, the odds of you being able to book that ticket first go (even with MNL as the non *A hub stopover) is equal to Julia Gillard losing the next federal election.

It always helps if you are fluent in Spanish... :p

My last Avianca experience was in 2010, and I found their customer service to be rather "average". I had 2 situations arise where I had to rebook, and the service I received was haphazard, and inconsistent. I suspect this is what the "warnings" on FT are about.

Fortunately their New York office was particularly helpful in "fixing" my "issues".

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

I just signed up for life miles and tried a dummy booking. I am so impressed.

Come back with a more impressive booking in F and then we'll talk. :o

I'm not saying you'll be able to get SQ F SYD-SIN-ICN-FRA, I'm saying that if you want options, want to be able to do it all online, and I guess want to fly J, then TM looks great.

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

I've had more of a play around with the Life Miles booking system today (looking at random dates from SYD and MEL 6 - 9 months out) and here is what I have learnt:

The following burn rates apply (+ minimal taxes):

- AUS - USA J return (NYC as dest) = 135K points ($4050). Max pay + min points = 54K points + $1033 ($2650). Where the min points are bought at a 100% bonus, total cost is $1843 + taxes.

- AUS - EUR J return (BCN as dest) = 170K points ($5100). Max pay + min points = 68K points + $1301 ($3341). Where the min points are bought at a 100% bonus, total cost is $2321 + taxes.

- AUS - North ASIA J return (NRT as dest) = 100k points ($3000). Max pay + min points = 40K points + $765 ($1965). Where the min points are bought at a 100% bonus, total cost is $1365 + taxes.

Half these amounts exactly for one-way, which are allowed (a return is counted as 2 x one-ways).

Also:

- You can search by carrier.
- When no carrier is selected, Thai, Lufthansa, United, ANA, Air China and most importantly, Singapore Airlines were often coming up. Interesting no Asiana.
- You cannot search SQ by carrier which was weird, though it came up in most 'no carrier' searches I did.
- When searching by carrier I could find Asiana availability, but no ANZ,
- I don't think I saw any F availability.
- Stopovers allowed but it will cost you another leg.
- A max pay and min points bought with 100% points bonus is not that much cheaper than using 100% points and no pay if all points were bought with 100% bonus ($200 - $300 per return).
- This is not the sort of program to use if you have an indirect, weird route you want to take because you can only get that by multi-city bookings which will cost a lot more. Or if you want to go F the whole way.
- Plenty of A380 J availability on SQ and Lufthansa (for the moment).
- This is the program to use if you have 1 destination in mind and want to get there on good carriers quickly and cheaply in J. I think this is the sweet spot of this program. USDM is for the more adventurous, flexible and patient.
- I expect SQ availability to dry up very quickly once people realise you can get it on LM.
- I will be buying miles at their next 100% bonus. The fact that you can search and book online (and their website is much better than ANA), do points + pay and, for the moment, there is plenty of SQ availability immediately makes this much, much better than USDM for me at least.

YMMV.

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

I don't think I saw any F availability.
- Plenty of A380 J availability on SQ and Lufthansa (for the moment).

But is the SQ availability real!? UA is known to show phantom SQ availability which fails at the booking stage. As none of us have LM miles we can't test to that step. But perhaps they are suffering from a similar mass SQ delusion...or in the absence of bmi Diamond Club they are SQs new best friend!

As for F...I am pretty sure I found it, but that on the results page it was always mistakenly (I believe) referred to as 'Economy'. In each case flights were returned listed as economy but always with a 15k miles surcharge to a one way business redemption seemingly regardless of route. I think they are suffering from some 'O' class confusion.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

I think the MODS might have to assist here and move all of the discussion re: Life Miles Program into a separate thread. Better do it now when there are a few posts rather than down the track when it will get alot busier/messier/complicated :) Thanks in advance :)

It would appear that BMI Diamond Club has been ressurected. And now goes by the name of Avianca Lifemiles....

... and is tied to a new airline

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

Regional SQ J shouldn't be all that difficult to find (not free flowing, but not hen's teeth either).

Even longhaul SQ J shouldn't be completely impossible, though if ANA haven't changed they won't stubbornly show availability either, so other programs' tools are useful for this (or ExpertFlyer).

Whether it's real or not... well, depends on how well you can convince the agent. I remember looking up seats on ANA that when I tried to book with BD would seem to be beyond the reach of the agent.

I wonder if anyone with GDS experience might work out how to fool LifeMiles agents into grabbing seats that may not be within the normal reach (e.g. like the old "long selling" technique at US DM).

There's no Life Mile agents - you do the entire thing online yourself. You don't have to convince anyone - when you search it shows the flights that are available for redemption and you can book them on the spot.

True, the concern being expressed though is whether you really can book them (even though they appear) and as we have no-one who has taken this through to completion we as yet have no data-points on that.

Suddenly it appears all my Avianca points are useful. To be honest had never even considered looking at the website. I have a few points with them but I find keeping track of QFF (most of my big travel) has been more a focus. To think that I have been flying LAN within Sth America (often at higher fares) just to stick with OW. No more.

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

My money would be on the next 100% bonus miles offer to come up in December this year.

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

I have a feeling US is going to have to do 125% promos or bring back the 2.5c price if they're going to keep our loyal custom for funding their AA warchest!

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

Thank you MODS for splitting the threads so quickly ;) now it is much easier to read for myself (and hopefully for everyone as well).

Happy travels all. Looking forward to playing around with this new program for some good value premium cabin travels.

Spot on! Although it would be nice to have a tie in with Hilton and Europcar. ;)
