re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

as I said - the chart makes no mention of connecting flights, and the chart is accurate for existing flights (non-stop) from Australia to the regions it mentions.

Sth Asia? You can fly AU-BKK on TG (chart satisfied)
Nth Asia? You can fly MEL/SYD to PVG/PEK/ICN (chart satisfied)
From NZ? You can fly AKL to BKK/PVG/NRT (chart satisfied)

It's no like the chart is saying you can fly from 'others' to Nth/Sth Asia, but there are no flights (other than connections) available.

I know what you means but let's agree to put aside the semantics and enjoy what's possible. By that I mean only 2 out of 14 South Asian destinations (BKK / SIN) are actually possible as one award out from OZ / NZ.

I take the point MEL, but if we're playing that kind of game, then why bother listing the (many) countries that constitutes North and South Asia? Why not just put Thailand under South Asia and China/South Korea under North Asia? Also, nowhere does it say, that flights are limited to only 'nonstop' flights.

I understand the point that we should be 'glad to have what we have' but it's kind of depressing to see it get worse for us (primarily) every single day - and were weren't even the main abusers of the program.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

...then why bother listing the (many) countries that constitutes North and South Asia?

because the chart is not designed only for Australia! It is designed for the whole world. And everyone else can fly to the other countries with connections.

Look I'm not saying LM is in the right here... just that perhaps that the table in itself isn't evidence of our right to book something. We may have a legitimate expectation that connections are available, but that doesn't arise out of the chart (it arises out of our prior knowledge and prior use).

AA similarly lists zones, and countries in zones, even though the unlisted routing rules prevent the claiming of many awards using connections between those zones.

If we were to argue award charts were guarantees of available routes (subject to availability), LM's 8-hour rule and plenty of unlisted QF and unlisted AA rules would be out the window.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

Not sure if anyone else has noticed but there is heaps of wide open availability on SQ J outside of the T-14 window for SIN-PER flights, although not PER-SIN.

I booked for March with no problems and there is availability almost every flight on every day through to June showing up. The outbound still appears to be limited to T-14.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

T-1hr now. Still no call. My heart is racing like crazy. I'll call LM again demanding them to ask the billing department to call even if they can't put me through.

Really stressful.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

Woohoo! Got it ticketed! Not a smooth ride though. But I thought I should just share how I got my ticket and maybe of help for others who has a bit of a bumpy ride.

Anyway, I waited until 10:30pm and still no call, it was T-30min and it doesn't look like they were gonna call, so I decided to give LM a call again. I got an agent named Peter (from US call center, very helpful), rather than demanding him to transfer me to billing department, I said "I was promised someone would call yesterday but no one called. My reservation will be canceled if I don't ticket it in the next 30 min, please help me!" (In a desperate tone!)

Peter apologized and said he will contact the billing department and see if he could help me with the payment. So I was on hold for about 10 min, and as Murphy's law would have it, my Skype call dropped. While I was trying to call back again, Peter called back on my phone from his landline! By then he has already got the Spanish speaking billing agent on the other side, so we had 3 way conversation.

Then for some reason, there was a problem processing my payment! It's odd! I used the same Westpac black MC that I always use with Avianca and never had problem. Peter said they will need a couple of hours to confirm the payment and will call me back. I wasn't gonna let him go that easily as I was so close. I asked him why would it take that long. He put me on hold and spoke to the other agent. There was about 20 min of silence and I kept checking to make sure the call is still connected. He came back and said there is some problem with their system so can't process the payment now. Oh no, I am just 1 step away from the 60 min spa treatment!!!

I ask them to hold the reservation for me, and regardless of time, call me if there is a problem with payment. He held the reservation for me and promised to call back. By this time, there wasn't much I can do about it, and we were in the phone for almost an hour. So we hang up.

Afterwards, I immediately contacted Westpac to authorize any transaction that is coming from Avianca/TACA, I was told the transaction has already gone through! Then within a minute, LM called and informed me that eticket has been issued. The problem was that there system could not do the mileage redemption at the moment. They asked me to keep enough miles in my account so they can deduct it later. That's no problemo! (In my experience, they frequently forget about it, so I might be lucky!)

So, 20000 miles + $541 USD for TG first class NRT-BKK-SYD! I'd say that's a real bargain, consider some airlines would charge almost as much cash in fuel surcharge as well as miles. Is it worth the trouble? I'll let you be the judge! But if you have similar issues with them not calling, maybe beg them for help like I do rather than demanding to speak to billing department. I think technically they just can't do it, and even if they get you through, you need to speak Spanish.

In the mean time, I'll catch up the sleep I missed last 3 nights and dream about this trip!

yeah - can someone explain how that works? sounds similar to USDM share? so effectively buying points at 1.5c but they'll end up in another account?

Well done !

I can also vouch for Peter.

BTW, how did you ask for readjustment of miles vs money ?

Calculator at hand, asking them to move it 1,000 miles at a time to reach the $0.015 c/m magic mark ? Did they allow readjustment or not ? Thanks

I'm only a newbie, and wouldn't want to put you wrong, I'm sure some of our Lifemiles Affer's will be along with loads of experience ..:)

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

unless I'm missing something... the current transfer offer is not a good deal.

USD17.70 per 1000 miles transferred, plus the cost of the miles to originally buy them, makes a co-pay or 2-4-1 much cheaper.

Am so glad for you. I for one am out from now on - its not worth the stress for me. I will post my successful bookings in the other thread that have been done over the weekend.

It is $15/1000 mile. I think you are referring to the last bonus share offer.

LifeMiles 100% Mileage Transfer Bonus Through February 16, 2015 - One Mile at a Time

I can concur with Ben it is $15/1000 mile.

yeah - can someone explain how that works? sounds similar to USDM share? so effectively buying points at 1.5c but they'll end up in another account?

Yes. If you transfer 1000 miles to your wife, she will get 2000 miles and you pay $15. So effectively purchasing at 1.5 cents each.

As Ben says, it's as low as it will go. But at current AUD, it's not as good as it used to be. Yet I don't see how AUD can climb up in the near future.

Also with the glitch going on at the moment with LM, to book connection with TG will have to go through the ordeal I went through in the last few days. But then again, it was a great bargain, and there are other very lucrative redemption out there still. eg. SIN-NRT-SEA/SFO/LAX/ORD in NH F for only 99000! And no fuel surcharge is a big one!

Re: Avianca Life Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here

I would love to but i coudln't see any availability in F. 2 passengers around 25/26 June (flexible). Can you see anything ?

June is too close. To get F x 2 you need to be at least 10 months out. To score 2 J is already quite an achievement. Don't forget there are those Americans who gets 100,000's of sign up bonuses competing the seats with us......

Actually, there are Fx2 on the 24th, so 2 days prior to when I have booked already.
The hassle though is that there is nothing SYD-ICN on the 23rd, and also nothing LAX-MIA with QF on the 24th.
I could look around for other connections, cancel the existing ones, and rebook. Is F really worth it ?

Not with that much trouble. If just a difference of 15k miles, I would say yes. But to cancel that many bookings you will lose a lot more miles and money. (And you don't wanna mess with LM trying to do connections in BKK!)

In my experience, the issue with current J lie flat seats is that they are quite narrow. You usually have to put your feet in a tiny cubby hole. I am a bad sleeper that I always flip around, spread and cross my legs. So I always bump my feet on the walls of the cubby hole, or bump my elbow on the armrests. The best sleep I had on business class was surprisingly on QF skybed MKII. Although it it's 2-2-2 configuration with no direct aisle access to everyone, there is no cubby hole so I had no problem with my legs. I picked the centre aisle seat so I had no aisle access issues.

But that was just me. If your parents are like my wife, who would not move an inch while sleeping, then J is more than adequate.

All that said, check on YouTube and watch the trip reports some others made. See and decide for yourself.

Re: Avianca Life Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here

I'll keep checking to see if availability opens on the same flight I am already booked on. That would only require a change of one flight, or a refund/rebook, but cancelling and rebooking three separate legs is a bit of a pain.

i might be mistaken here but how does it work out to 1.5cents/mile?
in their email it says "Transfer fee for each block of 1,000 LifeMiles: USD $17.70* including taxes for each country**"
that would make it 1.77 cents /mile?
agree that if it were 1.5cents it'll be almost as good as it gets, with only the cyber monday extra 15% sale taking it cheaper than 1.5c/mile.
with that in mind as well, unless one needed the miles in the near future, might be worth waiting for the cyber monday sale again at the end of the year since there's that 150,000mile cap/calendar year?
