Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

since the program started it has been more than that. there was also no USD25 fee when the program started. every time the cost has gone up there has been ZERO notification. that is extremely concerning and IMO it is a deceptive practice. they are selling miles and then the following week changing the value of them. it's pathetic.

i haven't read their terms and conditions. what do they say about changes to the program? maybe they cover themselves there.

They probably do... but it's just a very bad way to treat customers. I would be very very wary of holding any balance in my lifemiles account as a result of this repeated devaluation of the program. I think I will only buy and book immediately from now on. USDM is approx the same price as LM I think for Asian redemptions from Australia, plus you can get stopovers.

As a result of this the AA program is looking to be a better proposition now for one way bookings, when they have promo's on miles.

The Lifemiles facebook team have denied that there was ANY recent change to the cost of miles or the award chart... it's rather ridiculous.

They are probably denying because they haven't been informed either!

Interesting that the option to buy miles has gone from the website!

Just checked website and you can still buy miles. But agree with others its best to wait until you want to book and wait for double point promotion just before it to buy the points!

The page is still there but its harder to find, keeping an eye on it simply because its time for the bimonthly promo ;)

how is it harder? I hover over 'Earn' and there it is 'Buy Lifemiles'.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

Its not coming up under "need more lifemiles" which is how I used to do it.

I'd argue it's easier to find by clicking on Buy Miles, since it's a direct link from the main page

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

SYD-BKK return, first class

130k points - $3,900 ($30 * 130) or 52k points + $1,230 ($30 * 52 = $1,560 + $1,230 = $2,790)

how are people saying it's cheaper to do all points? waiting for bonus buys?

Yes, because normally its $15 per 1000 in a bonus.

makes sense. thanks markis.

also - just had a dummy play on the website - looks like you can get A380 J SIN-SYD on SQ? (used a date of 27 august) is this why lifemiles may be preferable to USDM in some instances?

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

i think this has been mentioned before but worth noting there is a 'sweet spot' on the co pay (miles plus cash).

the first 'more money' click values 1000 miles at $30, the next one at about $25, then it falls back to $15 reduction per extra thousand miles you use. this might vary slightly by itinerary... but it makes sense to find that sweet spot.

by spending 2k more miles on my recent bookings I saved $55 off the co-pay from each. those 2k miles only cost $30 during the 2-4-1 promo so a net gain of $25 per booking.

correct! and LM also has access to LH F at t-14 days!

This I did not know - how interesting. Is this "consistently"? Or only on some flights / routes? All subject to normal availability of course.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

Its cheaper to do points plus pay than just points, but its even cheaper if you can buy the miles component when they are on special...

Its actually something of an inverted bell curve, go too far and it starts to get dearer again.

On a 47500 J redemption to Asia it's cheapest at 25500 miles plus pay through to 22500 miles, going to the minimum of 19500 sees the copay at $436.54.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

I had to graph it, to see it - SYD-LHR one way F Class. Start position = 105K miles (with US$0 copay - i.e. no copay).

LIFEMILESCHART_zpsb99c93e5.jpg

The sweet spot for the "incremental cost" of miles, is at 70,000 miles + US$588 copay, where the cost for 1,000 miles drops to just US$8.56. (This is the 35K points mark on the graph. i.e. 35,000 miles off the original full price of "105K miles with no copay", which convert to US$588 copay.)

But, as long as the incremental cost, remains below the coughulative cost for all the miles purchased for the whole transaction, you are better off continuing to copay.

Thus, the sweet spot for the "coughulative cost" of miles is at 49,000 miles + US$840 copay, when both the coughulative cost and incremental cost of 1,000 miles is US$15. (This is the 56K points mark on the graph, i.e. 56,000 miles off the full miles price of 105K, which are converted to a US$840 copay.)

The minimum miles that can be used in this particular transaction is 42,000 miles + US$992.88 copay, at which point the "incremetal cost" of 1,000 miles has hit US$25.30 per 1,000 but the coughulative cost is only slightly up at US$15.76. (So even if you decide to max out the copay all the way, the coughulative penalty isn't really significant.)

Given that it's merely proportions, I take it that your observations are nominally applicable for any LM redemption?
