Are Qantas still having problems with their AVOD? Am off to LAX end June-hope it is working for the 14 hours.

Has anyone had any further good/bad experiences with Qantas AVOD??

Its interesting to see in the recent blog on smh.com.au that alot of people have had no luck with it!!

Are Qantas working on the problem, or is it in the to hard basket??
My last 4 flights it has worked 100% and I fear I may run out of luck when I fly to London in a couple of weeks!!

during my trip last week to NRT i had an AVOD unit that kept resetting itself about 10mins in to the movie. I let the cabin crew know and they were so apologetic that they said I could choose anything from the inflight shopping magazine  anything except the A$750 raymond weil watch they quickly clarified...

I really wasnt that upset about it all and I felt a little embarrassed about there offer - so I only chose the $140 sunnies ;)

the funny thing was that on my return flight I again scored a AVOD unit that didnt function properly - when I raised this to the cabin crew they basically told me tuff luck! Lucky the J section wasnt full so I moved seat...

Flying MEL-HKG the other day in J I had no problems, although the guy sitting across from me had his reset at least twice.

I used to think i would care but its worked every single flight i have ever been on.
Now i maybe watch a movie and then sleep, day or night , sleep :)

Once or twice they have had to reset the whole system but then its worked ok, i have noticed now you get a lot more messages saying you selection is not available yet, try again for a few mins and you get a slot, seems they have limited a lot more the number of people who can start a movie at the same time, so takes a bit longer for everybody to be watching, but if that what it takes then thats what it takes.

apart from my recent experience i have found QF AVOD reliable, however when you start flying a couple times a month it then starts to resemble a broken record (how many times can a man watch borat???? ....er well, about 13 but thats me I think ;)...anyhoo!)

loading up the laptop with the latest movies & mp3s (thanks to the power of file sharing!) is the way to go...

btw, have you ever watched the screen on start up...noticed it powered by Windows CE..... its amazing it even boots up!!!

Not just WinCE but also uses Z-Modem protocol to transfer the OS files :)

It seems like I am back in that parallel universe, because you are talking in some funny language I don't understand

Well, if you are going to talk about a parallel universe again .....

... or 'they' are back in the parallel universe.

A friend of mine who works for Rockwell Collins assures me the major part of the problem is that the CPU's aren't powerful enough which would fit in with the other comments here.

Yep, i heard the same thing about the servers, so isn't it a easy answer, upgrade them ! (Can't be very easy at all or else they would have done it)

E

when its built on old technology it isn't a straight forward upgrade......can be done however I assume the Qantas honchos still believe that the number of complaints hasnt yet outweighed the costs of upgrading ;)

If it works intermittently it is not broken!

If it is not broken then no need to fix or upgrade....

Would you accept this in regards to aircraft engines and air bags on cars? Also what about politicians, as they only work intermittently.

Really? When do politicians do that?

On the few weeks that parliament sits (its a long walk from the comm car to the restaraunt, and the 2 months prior to the election every 3 years. Kissing babies and making all those promises is had work.

Reggie only computer software. Most companies like to defer the purchase or upgrade of non essential computer software as long as possible. IFE would fall into this category.

Surely no one purchases an airline seat based on whether the IFE works 100% of the time. I know I don't. Off to find my parallel universe....

i find it funny that qantas (& Deborah H) are happy to mentioned that they have a 'world award winning IFE system' before every dom flight - yet qantas aren't prepared to maintain this will essential upgrades

I know the quality of the IFE system influences my flight choice (i.e. QF 744 AVOD v BA 777 non-AVOD)

...yet sometimes this backfires when the QF AVOD aint working
