Avoiding surcharges Mel - North America

No! I have have an award flight in AA73 connecting to QF421 booked with QFF points coming up in March (+++ was USD47.29).

An economy QF12 connecting to QF421 flight booked today costs 45000 points and +++ of USD406.43, of which USD350.60 are Carrier charges; it rises USD400.60 in carrier charges for Business.

I presume that the flight is Qantas metal (QF12) but that it is an American airlines codeshare (AA73) which you have booked with Qantas points. Good effort. However, how does one book such a codeshare? I don't usually see codeshares of this kind on the booking engine. Do you need to ring the Qantas booking people to do so?

The reason I ask, aside form educating myself about saving money going to the US, is because redeeming Qantas points to go to Europe is quite expensive. On Qf9/Qf10 return its currently showing as 120k plus $684.14. Of course APD is $138.30 of that but there is still $360 in fuel surcharges.

Would one be able to avoid the $360 surcharges by booking the AA codeshare for these flights. if so, how?

AA73 is not a codeshare. It is an American Airlines marketed and operated flight flying LAX to SYD, currently a 77W and soon enough to be a 789.

To book using QFF awards on it, see post #6 and this post/thread: AA's SYD-LAX flight .

Thanks for your patience.
Bbut perhaps my original question was misunderstood.
Lets say you have a Qantas operated and marketed flight SYD-LAX. AA codeshare with Qantas on that flight. is it possible to book, using Qantas points, the flight under its AA number rather than simply as a Qantas flight? In doing so I presume you could avoid the Qantas surcharges.

Yes and yes ...

Thanks everyone for your help

Ultimately I booked a return flight MEL-YVR using my Virgin points. The taxes only worked out at $275. My niece is really happy.

The information about booking American flights is quite useful and I will note this for future reference.

I do however have one final question.

I know that it is possible to use Qantas points to book an American flight number on American metal but is it possible to book am American flight number on Qantas metal using Qantas points?

cheers peter

I’m not quite sure I get it, as AA72 isn’t QF operated though.

A quick further question if I may. Slightly different circumstances but connected to the above.

2019 I have tentative plans to travel to Japan in about April. From my research I understand that JAL don't charge fuel surcharges. Based on what has been discussed above, I should be able to book either a JAL metal flight to/from Australia or a JAL codeshare on a Qantas metal flight and thus avoid fuel surcharges.

However I selected dates in both April and November and the only flights listed are Qantas metal with no JAL codeshares or JAL metal.

Does the glitch mentioned earlier also extend to JAL and I presume other partner airlines that don't have fuel surcharges?

Thanks Peter

You can't book, say, QF11 with QF points on the AA code as far as I know.....

If you are booking QF metal with QF points you are copping the QF ++++
QF points on say AA or JL metal, not so( note JL wont show upon QF website, need to search JL or BA for awards)

All good now.

I have just been reading a review of JAL first class. Very tempted to splurge my points!

cheers Peter
